XOHM Baltimore launch Oct. 8 - 810WME availability?

OK, so there's supposedly an event for the Xohm network remnants on October 8th. I'm probably going to take advantage of my press pass for this - not because I am excited about Xohm, but because I am looking forward to the release of that little seen device - the 810WME.

Does anyone have any further info about 810WME release in conjunction with this network launch? I am also interested in learning what I can about the WiMax frequencies supported by the device HW.

The specifications page says 2.5GHz, as it has for some time.

Yes, I know that. But most of the Wimax rf chips have multiple frequency bands and it's possible that the device also supports another frequency band but the Nokia specs page doesn't say that because the device was developed (and is marketed) with Xohm primarily in mind. Once, I have an actual device we can pop it open and look at the chip.

Am I the only one who thinks 8l0WME looks obscene?

Heh, I didn't look at it that way -- I guess the pr3s3nc3 of an 'e' disables my 1337 filter.

All the more reason to include the N and drop the ME...

XOHM WiMAX Launches

Good news to those in Baltimore -- Sprint is finally launching XOHM WiMAX. With the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition (WME) still marked as 'coming soon,' N810 WME users will be enable to enjoy unlimited downlink speeds of 2Mbps to 4 Mbps on a no commitment or contract plan of $30 a month for six months and $45/month thereafter. WiMAX is expected to arrive at Chicago and Washington next and soon to Dallas, Fort Worth, Boston, Providence, and Philadelphia. [Thanks SD69!]

It seems there are currently a few issues with using n810w on Xohm:

Ah, he's still out there then.. he seems to dislike any device I've ever liked, or at least valued as worth looking at. What a guy! :)

Can you say what Wimax chip is in it?

Re: XOHM WiMAX Launches

I asked in 2007 how does one change between different devices on Xohm w/o a SIM like authentication mechanism (say if you want to switch Xohm usage from NIT to home modem, or from laptop to wimax/evdo phone, etc.).

The authentication mechanism on 1st generation devices is apparently MAC based with a proprietary connection manager SW. So if you want to switch usage between two devices, you have to register both of them. Apparently, registration process is easy although you do pay more for the luxury of using two devices.

Isn't that on the FCC site?

If so, yes. If not, no.

Not that I could find.

I was contacted by Motorola, but nothing from Nokia or NSN. It appears that Nokia did not have the 810w fully interworking with XOHM yet and it is NOT available today. After all this time... bad fumble if that's the case...

This may be beyond Nokia's control though. I've heard Sprint has frequently changed how WiMAX devices must be provisioned on its network, leaving device manufacturers struggling to keep up. A last minute provisioning change by Sprint could explain the lack of compatible WiMAX devices at launch. The manufacturers may all be rushing new code through development and testing.

I heard that Sprint has changed authentication a few times and I posted about the custom registration front end before. XOHM is not exactly an open network according to my definition.

I experienced the same issue posted on the blog link above... ...at least initially during provisioning of the device. Initially with provisioning I was only able to connect via the XOHM portal - within the hour I had a full XOHM connection and no longer had to use the XOHM portal.
