n810 as phone
is there a way to use the nokia 810 as a phone. using my sprint phone? i heard somewhere thats there a way to use it as a phone via bluetooth or something.

Re: n810 as phone
Nah, afraid you heard wrong. There was a port of some software called "nohands" to use the N8x0s as bluetooth handsfree units, but no-one could get the audio to work properly.
If you have the skillset, you are more than welcome to have a look. search these forums for "nohands" - you'll soon find it. |
Re: n810 as phone
thank-you. i probability heard wrong like you said. im thinking about getting the n900 anyway... just wanted to see if it would work for the son.

Re: n810 as phone
Dunno 'bout your Sprint phone but all the N8**s are capable of tethering via BT. Or simply load Skype or Fring ( you'll need an account ) and use it in any open WiFi network. Calling your Skype or Fring contacts is free. Calling others requires buying Skypeout credit which is still reasonably cheap.

Re: n810 as phone
thank you......
not wanting to start a new topic: is there a way to get internet to the n810 not be wifi. like a 3g plan for it/ |
Re: n810 as phone
You can tether the n800/n810 to another device (like a cellphone) via bluetooth.
But there's no way to get the n800/n810 connected to a 3G network by itself. |

Re: n810 as phone
@sjgadsby OK, good call as I reread the post:)
the one thing I was thinking is that this would be great for someone who really doesn't want a cell phone plan to pay for a lot of minutes they wouldn't use. |
Re: n810 as phone
Yes, sjgadsby is right - MiFi is another device. However, it's smaller than my N800, has a great battery life, and serves as a wifi hotspot for up to 5 computers within 30 feet. It's a great option for those of us who live in the sticks and can't use cable, DSL, or satellite (it is SO much faster than dial-up!). Verizon subscription is $60/month - only downside is the 5 Gigabyte limit. I use it with my N800 and my thinkpad, while my son is also online with his thinkpad. MiFi usually stays at home, as most of the time when I am out and need internet I can use a free wifi hotspot. If I needed to take it with me it's not much more hassle than carrying a credit card.

Re: n810 as phone
thankyou.. all of you. im looking up the mifi right after typing this.

you'd need a portable router with it to make it work with the n810 i guess. i'm seriously considering this. |

n810 as phone ? yes i do
5 Attachment(s)
After i bought my N900 i bought also N810,I love maemo platform but n810 can't do calls. Until now !:)
I bought Telit GE865 gprs module ( i know, i know, gprs only  but i wait a new module ) and make pigs fly. Telit module can do calls with no more than a earpiece, mike, two resistors & capacitors, a battery and an interface with N810. It has a lot of functionality like fax, tcp stack ant python script interpreter. http://www.telit.com/en/products/gsm...p_ac=show&p=47 Possible solutions of module integration with N810 : 1 stand alone phone with limited conection with 810 only for dialing and sms 2 make full implementation like data connections & usb sd card increased size storage Module can be hiden under the 810 hood replacing mini sd card slot wich is almost useless. I do some hardware hack to PL2303 usb-serial bridge cause telit module have 2.8 volt serial interface. |

How often do you hit the 5GB limit? Have you ever used Skype (video calls) with it? I haven't been able to get a straight answer from the local Verizon people...does the Verizon Mifi have GPS capability like the Sprint version? Speaking Sprint: Has Anyone used the Overdrive (Sprint's updated version of the Mifi)? Thanks Snow bound in Central IA... @blue_led You have waaaay too much time on your hands....I am in awe...:D |

First steps adding Telit 865 module
1 Remove minisd slot 2 Add microsd slot ( mini-microsd adapter ) provisory until I will replace with spring pop-up microsd slot 3 Attach with double side adhesive tape the Telit module I have 1 big problem : space for sim . Probably i will remove all plastic of sim and solder directly. |
Re: n810 as phone
man, this is beautiful1

Re: n810 as phone
Please keep trying and posting!
This is the great idea and if you will have success, i will try to hack my n810 too. |
Re: n810 as phone

until now :
micro sd popup socket in place and wired sim card in place and wired to do : serial to module gsm antena status led mic place and wired earpiece place and wired |
Re: n810 as phone
If you guys can do all of this with the N810, do you guys think you could direct me to some hardware compatible with my N900 to replace the cell chip with a true quadband that supports WCDMA on the 850/ 1900 bands for AT&T 3G?
Thanks, Kham |
Re: n810 as phone
no.
I use quad band module as it is |
Re: n810 as phone
thanks for your posts, blue_led!
looking good keep us updated. |
Re: n810 as phone
This is amazing. You are going to have to let us know how it all pans out. I think I might have to replicate this whole process.
|
Re: n810 as phone
Cool! Doesn't microsd card prevents inserting battery?
Isn't your gsm module yet connected to CPU? Actually, i don't thing that using n810 as phone will be useful, but GPRS/EDGE costs the efforts for sure. |
Re: n810 as phone
Very impressive blue_led, I was wondering if anyone was ever going to try something like this. I'll be following this thread.
|
Re: n810 as phone
First, amazing work being done here. Congrats!!
Is this hack possible on N800? Can N800 be used as a phone too? |

@all thank you for appreciations ! @vkv.raju I don't know . i never see an N800. No. SD card is not full inserted.I let it out for photo session. Connections with CPU ? Well ...I will use debug serial port and telit module will be driven by standard AT commands. A GUI will be come. Sending and receiving sms from n810 ... priceless. |

Plus powering telit itself... Isn't it going to considerably decrease battery life? |
Re: n810 as phone
this is a really cool project; at one point i looked into buying an n810w to replace the wimax module with a-3g one as I though it'd have enough room and that there'd be some spare I/Os, so being able to do this with the n800 is very impressive!!
|
Re: n810 as phone
This is really great work, and it would be really cool to see this make it as a kit similar to the full size sim kit, and too see how much it would cost.
If possible the best interface would be to have a plugin to the existing comms/voip application on the device. |
Re: n810 as phone
I have also wondered (but do not have the knowledge to poke around) whether some software exists to connect and use the built in Voip app on the N8x0s as a handsfree/dialler console connecting to a phone over bluetooth. I have used VOIP-VOIP over bluetooth and 3G, and it is reliable and robust.
We almost need something like an asterix server on the phone for the N8x0s VOIP client to connect to and route the calls out as a regular call, and when receiving calls to forward the calls onto the voip client on the tablet. Heaven only knows if anything exists though. |
Re: n810 as phone
blue_led, any progress? :)
I'm still checking this thread for updates every day and looking forward for your success, because i'm dreaming about doing the same with my tablet |

For antenna I find a solution and will be placed inside speakers assembly. I have a small problem - finding thin coaxial cable ( 1mm ) for connecting the antenna. i saw on schematics, uart3 have 2.8 V transceiver ( adapter ) so telit module can be wired directly on diagnostics pad |

And yes, I know a couple of bluetooth handsfree clients have been to the point of "almost works", and that we are not going to get anything now. Anyways googlevoice etc don't work on this side of the water! (does it?) BTW Blue_led - sorry for hijacking the thread for a moment, but heck, what you are doing impresses the hell out of me! Not a weekend project for the casual though I guess. |
Re: n810 as phone
thanks for the update blue_led!
great work! can't wait to see it completed. |
