HP WebOS TouchPad for $99!

Found this on SlickDeals, and I bought one. So it's real (provided HP actually ships it).

Here's the slickdeals webpage:
http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=3220862

I got mine by first signing up in their academic program (being an alumnus was adequate):
https://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s....do?aoid=35252
On returning to the tablets page, the prices were $99 for 16gb and $149 for 32gb.

Also, apparently Canada has retailers already at that price.

(Yes, I looked and another maemo.org thread had mention of this, but I thought it was worth a headline.)

i believe they are now out of stock.

Re: HP WebOS TouchPad for $99!

Seeing that Best Buy has only sold 25k out of the 270k they had in stock and HP is suggesting all retailers lower their prices to $99/149, it shouldn't be hard to find one.

Re: HP WebOS TouchPad for $99!

2 weeks ago Harvey Norman had an introduction to the TouchPad, and upon introduction the price arrived slashed!

I was contemplating getting one, but after these events, not sure/doubtful.

edit: the price is still low, never increased to correct price range.
Something tells me the retailers knew this product will fail before HP did, quite disturbing really.

Just got one for 150 at office depot. Currently out of stock though.
Can somebody port meego/harmattan to this.

THanks

What can you do with one of these? I mean, do they need binary blobs like the nokias or are there free drivers for all of the hardware components?

In case they can be put to use, do you know if/where they're going to offer it at a similar price in Europe?

$99 should be 70€ ;) however even that is too much if you cannot install a real Linux on it :p

I just discovered that it was supposed to be available in Germany, France, UK and Ireland starting from july.
Unfortunately the press release says that is should have arrived in Spain (and Italy ) during the rest of the year, so I doubt I can find a fire sale over here :(

Re: HP WebOS TouchPad for $99!

It's true. I had gotten a TouchPad last week, got it for the $100 off, on top of the $100 off, and there was a $50 instant rebate that was still active, so I paid $249 in total in just a couple of days.

Just got off the phone with Staples, got a $214 ($200 + sales tax) refund.

TouchPad for basically $35 + tax.

Actually it would be 68,8121221 Euro :D but in germany we usually get the same price like in US, just not in Dollar but in Euro, that’s why 99€ :)

That's fantastic. You are a god.

Granted, God of Exceptional Discounts on Mobile Linux Devices Unjustly Killed Before Their Time probably doesn't earn you a high follower count even by Discworld standards, but I've dedicated a shrine to you all the same. Okay, I propped a dead N800 up on a table in the basement and said, "Yay, gerbick," but that's something, right?

Re: HP WebOS TouchPad for $99!

I feel the love. Your N800 may return to your hands now.

And I'm officially on the quest to port Android, MeeGo or whatever to the TouchPad.

The price (70€) is incredible, but where we (from EU) can order it? Amazon still holds its price.

No one actually thanked op lol :D

The chances are we will never see it in the euro-zone for that price. We all know how manufactures like to up prices as soon as they come over here. I would be happy to see it for less than £150 though ;)

I know, I know. The same story was with "our European" N900, price for us was above 600 €, meanwhile "poor" US market can have it for less then 300 €.
Anyway, I'm also interested to buy Cordia Tab, but only if this "around 300 $" doesn't mean also "around 300 €".

Sent from my $149 32 GB HP TouchPad.

Whatever the price of it, aren't you buying into a platform that was/is/will be poorly supported, if at all in the future. Even Walt Mosberg (and he usually is fair to generous with his assessments) said it was lacking in many areas, and couldn't recommend it.

Joke:

Q: What's the difference between the N9 and the HP Touchpad?

A: About $600.

Dalingreen (developer of cyanogen mod for nook color) just wrote in twitter that he plans to make an android port for touchpad.

"Dear HP, please bring in europe your touchpads on low prices. Webos is dead for you, not for us.

just an open source fanboy"

Re: HP WebOS TouchPad for $99!

Saw the post on engadget last night, so got up early and went to office depot, landed up getting the last one for $130.
Seems it's been a little chaotic to get one of these things, and palm probably sold more this morning than they have since it launched.
Guys i met this morning were already at their 3rd or 4th place trying to get one, said everywhere they were selling out in just minutes.

It's decent, my asus eee pad is better, but the touchpad gets the job done for browsing and angry birds.
Certainly worth $130.

Now we don't have to fight over the eee pad.
$130 well spent.

Probably the best priced tablet development board out right now. MeeGo doesn't seem to have a Tablet UI fork going right now, seems like the perfect system to design for.

i'm using a webos phone at the moment (pre 2) so this has me interested, but i'm holding off until we hear more about plans for the 4g touchpad. I'd gladly pay 2-300 for one of those and eke some more time out of my pre 2.

what saddens me about this is like tabco, the appeal in webos was the deep integration between devices. It'll be interesting to see what ice cream sandwich brings to the table.

Re: HP WebOS TouchPad for $99!

From the cursory web research, it looks like whatever is not sold out of the brick & mortar stores is being recalled to HP. Wonder if they will still be selling their inventory once the price drop knee-jerk reaction has blown over (and the ebay/craigslist profiteers are done).

If this does get Android ported over, it would be worth the $100+/- investment.

In Australia, excess HP stock usually gets sold through online auction sites like graysonline. Is it the same for the USA?

I had a chance to get one from ebay. A retail store from NY, datavis got it in stock. It was sold-out probably in 10 mins. They have sold 6,378 units in less than 10 mins. ahah.. :D btw, it was the 16Gb for $119. :)

Re: HP WebOS TouchPad for $99!

This did come out in the UK at Tescos

Anyone know which US retailer still has these in stock?

Updated: and bestbuy UK. Price? £349

Updated 2: The price cut hasnt happened in europe yet - i say wait till monday and we might see this roll out here. No way will the price stay at current price given that HP only sold 100 tablets in the UK (700 across europe) apparently.
