I would not use anything other than Brodit, they often have something for even obscure makers/models. I have their active holder for my N900, and it rocks instead of having unreliable sucker mounts obstructing the windscreen. It's even CNC'd from massive aluminum!

Please be aware that each mount consists of two parts: the ProClip base and the mobile-specific active (with charging) or passive (without) cradle. ProClips are car-specific and available for more than one (non-destructive, so no screws) mount-point.

Besides that, you can re-use the ProClip base if you change your mobile - just swap the cradle.

Re: Good N9 car holder???

Yes, there is a perfect holder from Brodit with charging cable and one without. Bothe fit very well and with the gum protection. The only issues I had with the Brodit charger model is that GPS quality was down due to the charging cable...No clue why but it was reproducable with a second holder...

make it simple, take a velcro fastener.

Re: Good N9 car holder???

Brodit looks really good actually but very restricted I guess that's why it would hold so well. I need something something that I would move a bit

I used to have CR-122 (N8 holder) which is excellent for N9 with body protector. After the ball pivot got stuck I changed to CR-123 which is also excellent. Actually CR-123 has one superior feature over CR-122: you can easily adjust it so that the back camera does not get covered. This allows you to use car video surveillance apps like Camdrive.

Yes, picture I posted states Nokia OEM mount. I have it and I am happy with it. However, few notes: sucktion to windscreen works perfectly, sucktion to dashboard does not hold strong enough. Also you should add drop of contact glue between holder and its leg as otherwise you can only rotate phone in the holder to only one direction.

Re: Good N9 car holder???

A vote for the cr-122 from here, too. Very good holder. The suction cup mounting isn't ever very good so I ordered the ProClip for my car from brodit and bolted the holder to that. This way it's in perfect reach.

Cr-123 is very good also but I couldn't do this with it.

Looks fine. I paid about 29€ for CR-123 in a local supermaket. It's about 1€ more than the ebay price you referred to. Minus delivery of course :)

These are just expensive. I've got Cr-115 and it works great + it's not dedicated so you can hold almost any device with it. Almost, because wider phones don't fit. SGS3 doesn't for example.

Well I just bought the Nokia CR-115 and Nokia DC6 car charger both for £8

http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Car-Windscree...-/180998688685 Made to match N9 size 100%, and is under 6e. I prefer these who match exactly the size, since generic ones usually block the visibility somewhat. And of course has N9 camera holes in place.

I thought these guys were an Aussie company...
http://www.holdmyphone.com.au/select...ia&hselect3=N9
Turns out they may only be distributors/resellers for Brodit & re-branded as ClicOn.

Brodit & ClicOn are way down my list, they're just too pricey.
In Australia anyway, stuff is often way more pricey here than the EU or US.

The CR-123 doesn't have any surface covering the NFC reader part of the N9. This makes it impossible to have the tag in constant proximity of the reader, which is required for automatic "ending" of the rule once the phone is taken out the cradle.

Build quality probably won't be as good as the Brodit, but it's so cheap I can always buy another if it fails (which I doubt), plus being so n9-centric is no longer an issue thanks to it's cheapness.

Actual car holder/mount may not be as good as the Chinese one suggested by rainisto, but other features are interesting.

I found a bunch of other decent options...
http://www.ebay.com/sch/Mounts-Holde...efLoc=2&_sop=3
http://www.brodit.com/productList.ht...del=N9&pn=prod

Turns out Brodit is far cheaper if one buys from eBay retailers based overseas, instead of via that Australian reseller.
So after ruling them out, they're now back on the short-list, plus there's other interesting options in that eBay search.

Re: Good N9 car holder???

Thought I'd share a cheap DIY method for anyone that already has a garmin nuvi style mount in their car or wants to use one as a vent or dashboard mount. I've been using this for a few years now.

Vent mount:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/IG-A03-Sprin...item4cfcbc1e3a
There are a few different kinds, what’s important about this one is that there are spring-loaded clips that ensure the mount won’t just slide off after a few months of use. The N9 and this assembly seem to be light enough that they won’t break the vents on my Honda Accord, and I can still move the airflow switch.

Clip:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/BKT300-Garmi...item35a4d9eb7f
This is cut down and attaches directly to the phone case with double sided tape, I’ve tried epoxy but it was unable to withstand heat and the phone+case ended up sliding off the clip. I had a roll of Scotch Permanent Outdoor Mounting tape and it has remained secure for 2 years in 90 degree+ weather.

Phone case:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Snap-on-Rubb...item4601027de6
The phone slips in and out of this case easily. Unfortunately, the cutouts were a little bit off on the back but they do not block the camera if you intend to use this as a dashcam. I ended up cutting this in half to make it easier to insert the phone and to avoid unnecessary stress on the right side hardware keys as a result of putting in/taking out the phone.

The finished product costs less than $10 USD (there may be cheaper sellers, I just picked ones that sold items that look the same as what I bought years ago). I don't have enough different devices that a universal holster would benefit me, and I am not really a fan of the mounts Proclip has for my car, so this ended up working out best for me. The vent mount is the most expensive part in this and it's reusable if I ever get another phone down the line.

But edeal8 don't have the N9 holder/mount in stock, your suggestion does!
So I've ordered the N9 mount/holder via the retailer (e.topsell) you suggested.
There is quite a long delivery/wait time, but given the price I can't complain.

Just in case it turns out to be crap, this eBay search remains on my short-list:
http://www.ebay.com/sch/Mounts-Holde...efLoc=2&_sop=3
There's some much cheaper Brodit N9 options there, + a few other interesting options.
Then the final option on the short-list is....
http://telcoantennas.com.au/site/car...enna-connector
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Carcomm-P...-/270916914683

So can anyone recommend a good car charging kit & aux-in cable to use with this holder?
Ideally the new head-unit I buy supports BT audio stream, so a cable isn't needed, but I'll get it anyway.
If it makes things easier, I can provide more details about the car & head-unit.

As good as a holder/mount tailored specifically for the N9?
See the one suggested in this this thread...

Getting quite off-topic, but if anyone has some knowledge in this area please do share:
Has anyone bothered fitting their car w/a after-market antenna config. for better: DVB/DAB/Cellular/GPS reception?
I guess it'd only benefit the head-unit, as there's no way to interface such a antenna config. with the N9, no?

For quite nice car stereo integration http://www.gromaudio.com/ offers pretty nice post install boxes for quite a range of car models. Offers bluetooth streaming & usb harddrives & aux & android phone clients.

I've installed one box in my Volvo and it integrates quite nicely to volume and next/previous buttons on the car wheel. So I can control my ssd drive which on glove compartment from my wheel.

Not directly releated to car holder as such. Just mentioned if someone would be interested post-install systems on their cars.

Cheers mate,

I have a thread dedicated to finding a sophisticated head-unit, but I've settled on something much simpler there.
I just can't justify the expense when it's unlikely I'll have the car for much longer, plus, it's a very old car.
If you've got a minute perhaps you can weigh-in there, up to you, I've bookmarked your suggestion for next time.

*BUMP* for my final Questions in post #26, TIA...

Actually, looking at just one of the main retailers who sell this sort of stuff, there's 2x suction_cup versions & 2x aircon_vent versions.
They're all so cheap, I'm srsly tempted to buy all 4x instead of just 1x of each, what do you reckon!? :D

So ah, when it comes to chargers, this is what I've whittled it down to:

DC-20
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-ZhJmeQNGY
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nokia-DC-20-.../dp/B0060VMAHO

The following 7 are for next time (in rough order of priority), in case I'm not happy with the DC-20:

DC-17
http://www.amazon.com/OEM-Nokia-DC-1.../dp/B00AOCD31M
Universal 1000mAh car charger adapter ($4.10AUD not inc. post)
http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Universal-100...-/321069623694
NOKIA N9 IC CHIP SMART RAPID FAST RETRACTABLE CORD CAR VEHICLE CHARGER

Amzer Dual USB Vehicle Power Charger with LED Flashlight

Amzer Nano 5V USB Car Charger

Fosmon Car Auto Charger for N9
http://www.amazon.com/Fosmon-Charger.../dp/B005DS7ZPC
Gomadic (very pricey, but some extra interesting features)
http://www.gomadic.com/nokia-n9-car-auto-charger.html

Aux-in cable I imagine is pretty bog standard, my local "bricks & mortar" should have something suitable.
But if anyone can point some stuff out that I may not be aware of, please do.

Dunno, but I think your safest bet is the Nokia charger. I had to make a special USB-cable (short the data pins) to get my belkin USB outlet to play nice with the N9.

Re: Good N9 car holder???

Ah, sorry, I just skimmed through without paying too much attention. I don't have any experience on after market antennas but I'm pretty sure there's no way to boost the N9's reception with one.

I do have some experience with AUX-in cables and it's almost impossible to find (sound)quality differences in them. One thing you should try, though, if you are using the silicone cover that came with the phone, is that the plug goes all the way in. The cover could get in the way with some plug head designs.

In the theme of cheap chargers http://dx.com/p/car-cigarette-powere...d-black-222339

Don't know about the quality yet though, just ordered it just because I wanted to change my single adapter to dual one, and it looked nice enough for testing.

EDIT:
Finally arrived and tested that piece of crap shitty piece of charger. I want to say what Linus would say. But that one is utter crap and can charge max 100mA at most if anything. So not recomending it.

Re: Good N9 car holder???

Maybe it's a bit late, but this week i'll switch from the N900-specific Brodit cradle to a combination of:

Brodit 215058 - Brodit Mounting Plate for Herbert Richter with Tilt Swivel
and
Herbert Richter 1245/42 "Mini Smart Gripper 3"
...which is the smaller version of the universal holder HR 1245/46 explained here.

Re: Good N9 car holder???

The 4x Chinese "cheapies" I ordered seem to be way more suitable...
They're "cheap as chips" yet the build-quality is surprisingly decent, & they're cut exactly for the N9 (so Camera/NFC etc can be used).
One of them has arrived & already I'm quite happy, I'll compare it to the other 3x when they arrive & pick 1x.
I'll keep the other 3x as backups, or maybe even give them to friends/family who have N9's.

Sure, but then you are always locked to a specific current device. Besides that, i don't like those cradles that have direct contact with housings.

jalyst 2013-06-27 15:29

Re: Good N9 car holder???

Fair enough, different strokes for different folks...
The ones I got (at least not all of them) don't require direct contact with the housings, they should be usable with the stock case or similar.
