Jolla vs Z10 which to buy in 2016

My good old N9 is slowly dying. ( Micro USB won't connect and load)

I'm torn between Jolla Phone and Blackberry Z10. Z30,

Which phone would you suggest to buy in 2016.

My points for pre selection:
  • No Android or iOS
  • Acceptable build quality
  • Form factor over 4.5" is too large for me. Therefore Z30 might not be an option and most MS Phone were out.

My fears for Jolla:
  • Low build quality

Fears for Z10:
  • Low battery life, therefore maybe sitill give a Try to Z30

Sounds familiar :-(

I'm using both of them on a daily base - one for my German and one for my UK sim ... - they have both their ups and downs

The battery of the Z10 is ways to small but replaceable, cheap, available and as its small from size as well it's easy to carry a spare one ;-)

The built quality of the Blackberry is exceptional and it has the better camera plus a hdmi out.

The Jolla is thinner, lighter and has (for me) the better form factor. It runs two days with one load (the Z10 does 08:00 to 05:00 and on heavy use it's empty right after lunch)

I prefer Sailfish over BB10 when it comes to the UI and its android support is better (from my needed apps there is only one that won't work on Sailfish). On the contrary on BB10 there are more native apps available (most of them not free) which are often good pieces of software.
Both OS have a good community with loads of help. Sailfish is outstanding when it comes to modifying the OS, patches, and third party repos ...

Together they are a brilliant team as I can always switch to the right device for the things I want to do ;-) - if I would have to choose I would say the Z10 with Sailfish ;-)

Cheers

I vote Z10. However both might leave much to be desired in regards to continued support here shortly.

I don't own either phone, but I did have the opportunity to handle a Z10 and play with it. I'd thought about buying one as a potential upgrade from my N9, too. I didn't really care for it. The build quality seemed solid, but the thing has massive bezels around the screen and it's unnecessarily tall. I didn't like the way it felt in my hand, but it's nothing you couldn't adjust to. The software was really responsive from what I remember, but it's a lot different from Harmattan. BB10 is based around swipe gestures too (of course), but the whole experience is a lot different. Harmattan is friendly, slick and stylized. BB10 is clean, professional and functional. For me, the Z10 was just too bland. Totally functional, very smooth and certainly capable, but not for me.

Jolla sells as litlle as 135euros for a non-client in Estonia from the Finnish telecommunications company Elisa. It's quite catchy price in my opinion for a phone that can decently do android as well. Though i'm sure jollas screen brightness will quickly disappoint at the daytime use.

I use a Z10 as my dailydriver. Other the small battery , it is a perfect phone for me. Z10 hardware specs are also considerably better , with more than 1.2 GB ram free after booting. I carry a spare battery and the blackberry battery charger to compensate for the small battery. I will jump the ship the moment intex starts selling that sailfish phone though. Hope they launch it at the MWC.

I'm looking forward to this too. I just hope the hardware comes out good in quality! By the way, I still am using my N9 as my main phone. And a super cheap android to run a few necessary apps once in a while.

Z10 has a very small batttery, barely lasts the day even without any usage... Better get the Leap, which is the same except for a slightly bigger screen and much bigger battery (no NFC but has FM radio).

Z30 is not that much bigger than jolla actually once you have them both in your hands.

That was my impression based on other comments as well... I don't want to carry an extra battery.

I would try Intex, but who knows, when the start selling,... I don't have too much time.
Since a couple days my N9 loads only if USB cable specially adapted with some duct tape...:) :(:(

But as I feel everybody suggests to buy Z10 or both or some bigger BB,... Quite confusing. Noone would prefer Jolla here in TMO either.

(Waiting for Intex is not an option...:()

Get a Nexus5 and install SFOS, there are few issues tho, e.g. no MS exchange, maps, android support, and relatively high battery consumption due to a bug in sensors.

Another N9--Z30--Z10--Jolla
IMHO
Harmattan--BB10--jolla

Buy Jolla. Of course.

I have both. One of them is gathering dust in its box. The other was used to write this reply.

I don't know calendar quality in N9, I came form Nokia E6 to Jolla.
There is no upcoming calendar events in events view - there is patch for incoming events on lockscreen. But it's not the same.

You can't add new calendar, there is only private and birthday calendar.

There is no week view.

I don't know anything about sync because I don't need it.

If you need basic calendar function it's usable.

Keep in mind that BB10 Android runtime is completely sandboxed, but that makes it noticeable (but not considerably) slower than Alien Dalvik. :)

I have a keyboard ;)

EDIT: and terminal and whatever I want. BB is a closed garden, very similar to iOS and WP.

Re: Jolla vs Z10 which to buy in 2016

I have access to both Z10 and Jolla. Both are very nice devices and I don't think you can easily say "this one is better than the other" - it depends on your preferences. I find SailfishOS easier (and more fun) to use and the Android support is better, but BB10 is more robust and useful for work/organization purposes.

I would say Jolla is similar to the N9, just smoother - both have a simple calendar, e-mail, messaging. BB10 has much more advanced features than Harmattan/SailfishOS in this area, but not everyone needs it.

If I were to decide between Z10 and Z30, I would definitely go for Z10, as it has a better form factor, fits nicely in your hand.

If I were to decide between Z10 and Jolla, it's not an easy choice, but I have already decided - I am writing this on my Jolla :) But the choice is subjective - I appreciate the openness of Jolla, where you may never need to fiddle with the system, but still have the option if necessary. And I think that Jolla is more future-proof, but it's just my opinion. It would be very nice to have the Hub and advanced PIM features on SailfishOS, though...

I meant VKB. BB10 doesn't have Bulgarian keyboard support and despite my 3 years of trolling, still doesn't. Jolla also didn't have on start, but I made one the day I've received my phone :) That's the difference I prefer.

Truer words have never been spoken, especially living with a N9 in 2016. But luckily, the folks on this forum have made it quite easy for a ton of things that normally would create havoc due to those features no longer working (i.e. Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, requiring a Nokia account, etc.)

I went to a Nexus 5, it also lets you see what Ubuntu is like or android.
Also you can run android in a window in sailfish on the Nexus 5 not quite the same as alien dalvik but it works well

A year ago i had to make the same decision :) and got Jolla. With some memory managament tricks, its a perfect replacement for N9, just dramatically faster. Edit: downside of Jolla - screen and camera.

Re: Jolla vs Z10 which to buy in 2016

I've had all these devices and every single one of them had some issues that I couldn't live with. Z10 had terrible Battery and I mean the worst. Jolla was too large and it had very low quality screen. I now have BlackBerry Q10 and it's awesome, no drawbacks. That's the direction I would advise you to try. Buy a cheap Q10 and give it a go for a week or two, you won't be disappointed. And if you want something larger you could always try Passport, I wouldn't go for Classic because of it's crappy screen.

You can ask them if they able to ship phone outside of Estonia. Let us know.

I'm also looking a good phone for several years. Right now, I'm having Z10. Jolla will arrive in 2 weeks.

It's sounds good, but 5 inches and FullHD doesn't looks good for me.
But.. It's possible to replace a FHD screen to 720p version?

Merienth 2016-02-22 21:44

Re: Jolla vs Z10 which to buy in 2016

So I decided for Jolla.

Yes I see the drawbacks, but the Z30 is simply too big.

I don't know if there are supermutants living arround the world nowadays, or just I wasn't fed well when young, but my hands are too small for the current standard 5".
Not to mention to put in some of my pockets.

And even Intex went for 5". :(

Sure the OS is important there, but I like BB10 after a couple of tries as well.

Anyway, thanks for every opinion.

Edit: My prejustice bellow wasn't fair: They started shipping in 3 days. :)

Just a sidenote rant: What the hell does last 10-20 days  to deliver a phone,... the only product they sell? I nearly went back for the Z30 with 2 days on local and 5 days for amazon/ebay reseller. I hope they use their 10 days well, and polish it with some gold dust, or wthever.

Hey! Please say, why? In my case I still don't know what to choose too. People say that BB is dead and unsupported. This things are discouraging me from BB. I want a good android support in just a few apps. Tbh I'm interested in Skype app only :D
And a native good folder music player. I haven't seen just a simple player like easyplayer from n900

Just consider a WP. It has skype, music player and support. :D

Some pepople here might stone me to death and even funnier I bought a Jolla just now...

But if you find your Android apps counterpart, and don't care "walled garden" either, Windows might be ok.
It is not more unstable than iOS, and has nowdays a better app pool than BB.
