OOOH! Ubuntu on Android... (Apologies if this is a repost)

A complete Ubuntu desktop for docked Android phones

Ubuntu for Android provides a full desktop experience, including office software, web browsing, email and media applications, on Android phones docked to a screen and keyboard. Thanks to tight integration with the Android service layer, the transition between the two environments is seamless, making it easy to access the phone's services from the desktop when docked.
Sounds good to me?

So while this is hot new stuff in Android-land (aka mobile phone stone-age), in Maemo-land we just yawn at it. :)

But it also says it uses the power of the phone? When we boot an PC with N900 with ubuntu we only use the N900 as boot device, or do I get you wrong now?

Still, I think it's a bit confusing written there, I hoped for more technical information...

Not sure what you mean by boot a PC to Ubuntu. Like use the N900 like a bootable flash drive?

What Canonical is doing is making it possible to run Ubuntu off an Android phone (at least from the articles I've read) when you use it in some sort of docked configuration (e.g. plug a bluetooth keyboard in, or attach it to a monitor without a desktop attached). Which the N900 could also do before. But with the Ubuntu + Android configuration you have access to a "good" (at least to me) smartphone when you need it and a desktop like experience when you need it. Whileas with the N900 you got both at the same time but not that great at either (IMHO).

I think docked in this sense means plugged into a charger that also provide HDMI and USB out. But yes, this is basically ye old Debian chroot with video out (the old N8x0 wet dream).

is ubuntu worth it though?

The main point is "shared services and applications are delivered using a Convergence API module which ensures the tight integration between desktop and mobile environments". So that the mobile device-hosted ubuntu has access to Android data like contacts, agenda and the so (you get the more or less the same result by accessing to your google account from your ubuntu or whatever desktop).

Ubuntu and Debian have been running for ages on Android devices, in a chroot like Qole's Easy Debian, upon the Android-tweaked Linux kernel. No docking is needed, you get the Ubuntu desktop screen on your mobile device display, and interact with it directly. See this video from my Samsung Galaxy Note:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TXVS...ature=youtu.be

That's Openoffice.org upon Ubuntu 10.10 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1405447 (Ubuntu 12.04 is almost there). I have been running Debian Squeeze too from a chrooted environment I made according to http://www.mayrhofer.eu.org/debian-on-android but this Ubuntu image is quicker.

Oh, and Android is not mobile phone stone age. It's the species that the rules of evolution are presently favouring... while unfortunately our beloved Maemo, due to climate changes, is getting its place among fossiles :) Both have large chunks of DNA in common, coming from the archetypal Linuxius Torvaldsii archeobacteria ;)

Is this Motorola Atrix-type stuff? Atrix using a docking station which provides Ubuntu ("webtop" mode).

Anyway, Bullsnort if you ask me. Both for Ubuntu and having a separate dock doing all the gruntwork.

Seems that all those chroot systems are using VNC as display. It might look usable on video, but for real use it is too slow. Hopefully Ubuntu on Android will use something else.

"Ubuntu for Android" from Canonical does not use the VNC solution, as far as I know.

Did I miss something? We dont have this tight type of integration through maemo do we?

Seems pretty seamless and fast

Nope, we don't...

I'm still very pro n900, but as amazing as easy debiian is, the fact is it's only barely acceptable, speedwise...

What i do hope though, is that the ubuntu side of things is not restricted to only working whilst docked..

Once we have X for Android I don't think things will work only with dock. In the meantime don't think VNC is so bad on Localhost. On modern multicore devices it's quick enough for non-video tasks.

Duh.. N900 is an ancient device. And Ubuntu is targetting Android, not Maemo. Nowhere did they say this will work on older Android devices. Even if N900 was running Android, it would simply be amond the non-supported ones. To quote:

While mid-range phones can deliver a perfect Android experience, it takes high-end horsepower to drive a phone and a desktop at the same time. Newer multi-core processors are up to the job, and Ubuntu is the killer app for that hot hardware. It’s the must-have feature for late-2012 high-end Android phones.
If you feel you need this, Androids are getting quite cheap these days.

I don't need this 'feature', so I'll stick with my beloved N900. I'm booting Debian Wheezy on it. I don't see the need for anything else.

I think you misunderstood - I wasn't excited because i thought it would be possible to run it via nitdroid, i just thought it sounded pretty cool, you know? Like a mini linux laptop that can fit in your pocket, kind of like those old nokias you used to be able to get... Nokia N something or other...;)

I'm wondering how much of the Android resource hunger will be present, or whether that could be done away with, or at least some sort of minimal configuration to give ubuntu as much as possible...

Its just a protocol that integrates Ubuntu and Android.
As far as the video goes, Ubuntu is not running on the phone or Android...but the features from the phone are supported within Ubuntu.

If you want native Linux, besides N900, N950, N9 (cringe), Spark-tablet...you can try native Ubuntu on the tablet:
http://www.xda-developers.com/androi...n-hp-touchpad/

BTW it is native port, not a castrated chroot hack

This is what I thought when I first saw this and I thought cool this will be hacked soon enough and ported to maemo but after further reading I dont be believe this is the case.

This is not an Ubuntu app running atop Android, nor it is an Ubuntu device running an Android emulator. Rather, Ubuntu for Android is a full Ubuntu desktop running side-by-side with Android on the same phone.

Well, I think it could be great if it can actually be used WITHOUT the docking, which I think would basically be something like easyDebian (EasyUbuntu) on Android... AND I don't like GNOME nor Unity, so I would like to see Plasma Active or something like that as a kind of optional setting...
This Ubuntu on a Galaxy Note... Interesting... Will this actually come true someday?

Want to get hands-on with Ubuntu for Android? I heard recently from Richard Collins at Canonical that he would like some help with user testing Ubuntu for Android. He tells me they are looking for some folk in or around London who would be willing to visit them in Southwark and help them with end-user testing.

They are looking for business people comfortable with technology, rather than for developers. Previous exposure to Ubuntu would be useful but is not essential. It will take a few hours in central London and they will provide a pleasing thank-you gift. Contact him
<richard.collins@canonical.com> if you’d like to volunteer.
