Remote shutdown of a linux pc?

Greetings all!

I've got an old laptop that met an untimely end (LCD screens don't like being dropped onto concrete, whod've thought?) which I've recently re-purposed as a linux server.

I don't want it on 24/7 though, and it's awkward to reach, so I'm wondering if there's a way to start it up or shut it down remotely through the terminal?

I'm able to ssh to it and issue 'shutdown -h now' to completely turn it off. but what I'm really interested in is some kind of sleep mode with wake-on-lan. The machine has a static IP and it'd be great to switch it on or off with single terminal commands.

Anyone with a more solid knowledge of linux than I have any suggestions?
