Anyone try SDXC in N800?
 

There are now some 64GB and 128GB SDXC cards available...this is the successor to SDHC with more address bits. The current generation is electrically compatible with SDHC and just needs software changes (if that). Has anyone tried these cards in an N800 yet? The N800 has two full sized SDHC slots so it would be possible to install 256GB of flash, which is pretty awesome... the cards are quite expensive right now but of course they will drop.

Is SDXC compatible with existing SD devices?
Existing SD and SDHC devices are not be compatible with new SDXC memory cards, but existing SD and SDHC memory cards will still continue to be offered by card manufacturers for the foreseeable future. Existing SD and SDHC memory cards will work in SDXC devices.

which says the current generation (SD3.0) is the same as SDXC, it's only the next generation that will become electrically incompatible. But that's a year old, so maybe the 128gb cards are SD4...

i hope they will be compatible but i doubt it will be and nobody wants to be a guinea pig for this thing as you can see theyre really pricey and with that money people rather buy something else...

The SD card consortium are either a bunch of incompetent fools or a bunch of money grabbing extortionists (or both). The original CF specs (1995) allowed for cards up to 128GiB. More than ten years later the SDHC specs (2006) modestly increases the original SD spec of 4GiB to 32GiB. The latest CF specs (2010) allows for cards up to 128PiB which is several orders of magnitude greater than that offered by this SDXC rubbish.

@kureyon, what SD Card Consortium? Don't you mean Sandisk?

Anyways, for chips that don't have an on-board controller, these sure are way more expensive than a USB stick with a built-in controller.

SD and CF all have onboard controllers.

I think xD is the only contemporary card with no controller.

The SDXC isn't a change in addressable areas, but a change in the size of the blocks transferred. Electronically, they're compatible. The issue is if the software (drivers mainly) is capable of adjusting it handle the extra data. Linux has had support for over-sized blocks (>512 bytes) for a long time.

Now the new fat format MS cooked up to put fat on these is another thing entirely. There is marginal support for that, both in Windows and linux. So that may be an issue. But if you want to slam in a 128G card and format it to efs3, the N800 should be able to handle that.

If you search the forums, you'll find a couple of posts from someone who already put a 64G SDXC card in their N900 and it worked fine. My understanding is that that part of the sub-system (driver wise) isn't that much different, and is one of the open components in any case. (SD tech isn't exactly trade secret stuff...)

Voltage wise, there's no way to damage a card from trying it. Just the data on it may be corrupted... so try it with a blank one. ;)
