OK to delete Wayfinder 'Map' program?

Hi everyone,

Sorry if this has already been answered, but I could not find a clear answer.

I would like to uninstall the Wayfinder 'Map' program on the n810 because it wastes 9.5 MB, and I never use it. I am much more likely to use Navit.

Does this 'Map' program exist in some repository somewhere in case I ever need to reinstall it? That is my only concern with deleting it: the outside chance that I will need it someday. But from what I have read, it sounds like nobody uses that program anyhow; instead using Navit or Maemo-Mapper.

So my question really is: Does anyone know if the install program for 'Map' exists in some repository that I could reinstall again some day?

Thanks,
Chris

I gave up on using Wayfinder a couple of years ago and uninstalled it. In all of that time I haven't had a need to reinstall it. (I do believe I did find it listed as "map" in the installable applications.)

Currently, I am using Navit. It scores over both Wayfinder and Maemo-Mapper in a couple of important ways:

1. Using OSM Maps, I am able to get map updates, including fixes and additions I enter (using OSM2GO).

2. I can do routing right on the device without an internet connection.

3. It doesn't crash like my install of Mameo-mapper does.

Yes, it's on the catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com repository so reinstalling it should be just a matter of running "apt-get install map". In fact I would recommend doing that now, and saving a copy of the deb (you'll find it in /var/cache/apt/archives/) because there are no guarantees that the nokia repository is going to stay up indefinitely.

^ Will there be some kind of advanced notice as to when the repositories will be shut down?

thanks for the help, guys.

I will go ahead and nuke the 'Map' program from my n810 to free up the memory, but will download and save install file just in case.

I haven't even used the gps much on it anyhow, but I have fiddled around with Navit and prefer that one to MaemoMapper.

Wow, I didn't realize that Navit was that usable. I've been a (relatively) happy Maemo Mapper user for years now, but I'll have to give Navit a look.

I deleted the Wayfinder stuff a long time ago because they stopped supporting it a long time ago. It is difficult if not impossible to update your maps. If you delete the map data from the Internal Memory Card, you can free up space for Easy Debian or cloning your OS or map data for some other program.

I've also been a happy Maemo Mapper users since I got my N810, but this thread inspired be to give Navit a try. I remembered looking into it when I first got my NIT but it seemed more difficult to setup than Maemo Mapper and there was less documentation and some negative posts about it. I gave the wiki another look and it seemed to make much more sense to me now, perhaps because I'm just more familiar with the N810 than when I first got it.

Anyway, I set it up last night and I have to say it's pretty nice. I wish there was a little better users manual for the GUI, but it's pretty easy to figure it out by playing around. I don't think it will replace Maemo Mapper for me, but it's nice to have both and I like the option of getting a route without an internet connection. When I have time to plan a trip before I leave the house I like using google maps to drag the route and determine the way I like best and then download the gpx file on Mameo Mapper --- so between the two I now have the best of both worlds.

I had to use the first example navit.xml file on the wiki because the second one is no longer there to download. I'd like to give that one a try though. The screenshot of it looks nice. Does anyone have the second example navit.xml?

"Modified version of above config file with much larger font sizes, easier to see car-dark (night) mode, defaults to 3D mode with autozoom"

Thanks!

I've customized my Navit experience quite a bit. I keep meaning to pull it apart and post the different bits to the Navit Wikit, but then I change something else. But, I will share with you what I am running now.

http://www.frontiernet.net/~flybrick...cleaned.tar.gz

This is simply a tar of my ".navit" directory. I have split up the navit.xml file into smaller files. The "*.lo" files are different screen layouts (map styles). The "*.vpr" files are different vehicle profiles. Both of file types are included from navit.xml.

The currently map style I am using is a modified version of the OSM style that makes things a little more easy to see. I have also made a "dark" version of the style for use at night. The styles both use icons from the OSM Icons that are mentioned with the original. I store these in "/media/mmc1a/navit/poi/png", which is on one of my extra partitions on my MMC.

The screen overlay started out as Mineque_001, but I have added a couple extra things to it, including a button on the right side to turn on and off the contour lines.

I know I have done more customizations, but I can't remember all of them....

Images

These images show you my customizations of the OSM map style and the Mineque_001 overlays. The extra buttons added are
  • Turn on/off Speech (top left)
  • Tilt View in 3D (up/down arrows on left)
  • Zoom In (bottom left)
  • Show Route (bottom middle)
  • Zoom Out (bottom right)
  • Compass (top right)
  • Odo and Average Speed (below compass)
  • Turn on/off Contour Lines (middle right)
