hehe...
I wouldn't rule it out... Drone's equipped with firearms is more frightening than drones with bomb payloads doing kamikaze runs... It means assassinations without getting caught will be very plausible... |

Re: Uh-oh...Things are going to start getting ugly now...
Reminds me of the drones with guns from Dark Angel except those could actually hunt down and target a particular person.

Re: Uh-oh...Things are going to start getting ugly now...
yeah ...I'd heard awhile back concerning this topic...
I know it may sound like pining for "the good old days"... But...when I was a kid...[hehe..yeah...i know...] ...and I'm sure many here can attest to the same thinking... We didn't have to fear climate change or remote controlled terror / death ...[one of the few fears there was back in the day was the cold war turning hot...really ..that was about it..] Nowadays...well ...goodness...who knows what to worry about tomorrow...the fast paced speed of tech change today...means just as much fast paced change in threat level... |

I never understood why the manufacturers do that. What is the point of going into all the trouble to stuff a mechanical machine with so much electronics and interconnecting things that never needed interconnecting in the first place... That is not an accidental side effect, that is a deliberate feature! Who asked for it? Of course bad stuff is bound to happen! Quote:
I assume you don't remember the ozone hole either? Stories about sheep in Argentina in 1980s having to wear blinkers to stop them going blind from too much UV light? Or leaded petrol? Around the small town where I grew up, all country roads were lined with trees. Some of them cherry trees. Very tempting for a 10 years old to climb up the tree and pick some cherries. Except they made you sick from all the lead from cars' exhausts. Scary sh¡t has been going on for as long as I remember. Some of it gets eliminated or reduced sometimes, but sadly the rate of adding new one is faster. Oh, and about terrorism. Convenient, isn't it? With the cold war over, we need a new scarecrow to brainwash the populace into complicity. Luckily there is the terrorism threat. Make sure it never goes below the amber level, or they may wake up. |

The engine control needs to be computer controlled nowdays, there's no alternative any more. You just cannot make a fully mechanical motor that would pass any emission control tests, nada. Same goes for the power steering, non-locking brakes, traction control, parking assistant, etc... they all are computer controlled and connected to a common bus so everything plays nicely together. As for the entertainment system, it is a selling point that customers want... so it has to be built in too. (Remember, the more gadgets you cram into the car the happier the hippy customers are...) Now comes the cinch; it would be so much cheaper if you could also use the same bus and protocols with the entertainment system as is used by the car control computers... and even cheaper if you could further integrate systems toghether! The less number of separate boxes and separate sets of wiring you can get by with is money to the pockets of the manufacturer! So we get to the same state as with aeroplanes: the manufacturer needs to weigh possible safety risk with sure hefty bag o' dough. Wonder which way they will swing? |
Re: Uh-oh...Things are going to start getting ugly now...
I read similar article a while back where they went even further: They were able to disable breaks by messing with ABS control unit and were able to increase speed by remotely controlling throttle... also locking car doors remotely, operating washer/wipers,... you name it. I tried to look for the article (it was in pdf format) but couldn't find it right at the moment.
EDIT: After reading further in the article they mention they experimented with Ford Focus in the past where they disabled the brakes. This sounds very familiar to the article I read before, so must be the same guys? |
