How to take the Red-Pill and install more apps on the N900

Original article -> http://www.themaemo.com/taking-the-red-pill/

The N900 (and the Maemo platform) allows the user to, for lack of a better word, “turbo-charge” the Application Manager by opening up a variety of advanced features locked away by default. Enabling them requires taking the “Red-Pill” so to speak. you can always opt for the “Blue-Pill” but c’mon, you only live once.

So, to enable this mode, open the Application Manager and select Catalogs from the drop-down. This will show a list of catalogs

Tap “New” and type the word matrix in the ‘Web address’ field.

Now tap on the blurry region above the Catalogs window. This will bring up the “big choice”

Taking the Blue-Pill will put you back where you started. Taking the Red-Pill will unlock the new world and the Application Catalog will display new buttons like ‘Settings’ and ‘Install from File’

The Application Manager will now update if an internet-connection is available and display a whole lot more packages. These packages are not only useful for development purposes but also for advanced use.

Please, end-users don't do it.

Ok, we'll say this once:

YOU WILL BRICK YOUR DEVICE IF YOU USE THIS WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT YOU WANT WITH IT

Normals users have ABSOLUTELY NO USE with this.

Please DO NOT spread this further without any specific requirement. You will end up helping people kill their own devices. Most "power-users" don't EVER need this.

There are many good programs only in EXTRAS .... Why not?

I think end users do not frequent guests http://talk.maemo.org

Because you can use extras without using red-pill mode?

Yes,
these packages may contain various bugs from memory leaks to wiping data.

They should be used with caution.

Red Pill is designed as a troubleshooting mode only, using it for any other purpose puts you in danger of making your device unbootable.

Red Pill isn't persistent anymore, thankfully, though.

If you are enough of a power-user to know how to use "red pill" then you are enough of a power user to know how to use things like "apt-get install" and "apt-cache search" from the command line. So you never have to use red pill. If you don't know how to use those commands, then you're not enough of a power user to be messing with red pill.

So what exactly does this mode do?
