Batery don't charge enought

Hello all

My N900 it's 4 years old now and since last week, it doesn't charge like before.
I charge it like all night (8 hours), and then the batery only lasts only like 4 hours with low using. After that, the phone just goes from full charging to empty and then turns off. To turn it on, I must conect it to the charger, or else it's impossible to turn it on.

I'm making this post to ask your opinion.

-Should I replace the batery for a new one?
-Is this a software problem and a flash can solve it?
-Should I just buy a new phone? (I don't want to xD!!)

Please help me! :)

I've never used a battery for more than 1.5 years or so.

That may be true. Or not!
I still/ have/had the original battery in my first N900 from May 2010 until November 2013. So over 3 years. And it was/is still in good condition.

Final sign of battery failure is a big jump down of charge level under (heavy) load, like a phone call and/or GPS/GPRS/... Followed by a recovery of charge level under normal/minimal load.

That's right. I had a phone once that started showing those signs after about 6 years of use. The battery gauge showed 59%, but answer a call - and the phone rebooted. Anything below 90% resulted in a very distorted sound during a phone call. A new battery fixed it.
