Is there any update on the release date for 2008 OS update for the N800 yet?

Yes ... it has been announced to be release at the same time as the n810. :)

I'm curious about updated applications. It's my understanding that everything will have to be recompiled for chinook. That being the case, it'll be a while until I upgrade, unless I can dual-boot between flash and a memory card.

Not all application need to be compiled.

PyGTKEditor, PyPackager will work as it s python application. Like UKMP.
