do you mean like the operamini handler did?

Re: Gprs hacking on nokia n900

In short: NO. Well before anything happens on the IP level your phone has to (1) register with a GSM network and then (2) start a GPRS session.

(1) and (2) are, for all purposes and by your definition of "hacking", unhackable.

Re: Gprs hacking on nokia n900

Well if cost is your concern, then hacking is not the real solution, go for these network "TATA DOCOMO" or "VODAFONE" for cheap internet (2G or 2.5G) and for 3G Internet go for "IDEA" instead.

BTW we are in the same network circle "Maharastra & Goa".

Re: Gprs hacking on nokia n900

@seanmcken,

Assuming that your operator lets you assign whatever IP address you like (*after* having established the GPRS session) and that they use the IP address for billing purposes, *then* you might be onto something.

But if the above is true, then Indian operators suck big time.

I don't know what you mean by "port number" in this context. You probably don't know either, so this is more a rhetorical question.

Lastly, if "most of people" actually do what you think and it works, then why ask here instead of asking "most of people".

For all I care this thread is closed anyway.

I think it's possible..I remember those times when I was using java and symbian phones...by changing th ip to sites like sneakme.net and votethru.com and the port to 8080..I was able to maintain anonymousity browsing from these sites...Don't know how efficient these are on maemo...

The OP is asking for a way to use GPRS for free, so your post is completely irrelevant to this topic.

We should not turn every reply to a fist of fury..make reference to seanmcken's poston post Nos 10 and you will see the relevance of the "completely irrelevant post"..gracias

Re: Gprs hacking on nokia n900

OMG! This thread is epic :D

@OP: This is practically impossible nowadays as almost all operators are 'clever' enough to filter out users based on the plans they are subscribed to. If you are not subscribed to a data plan, you will not be able to use PS network (you can use the 'pay as you use' plan). Btw, in some places, you can try recharging for 2G plan and access 3G network. BSNL has some flaws here. However, it is not possible in all circles. If they are using an updated software on the core network nodes, this should have been fixed as I believe user authentication and subscription details are checked at core network level.

EDIT: Btw, GPRS/EDGE plans are dead cheap nowadays Almost all operators give 2GB usage for less than 100 INR p.m (Aircel gives truly unlimited plan for INR 98). Many operators have already come up with affordable 3G plans as well
Eg. BSNL charges 151 INR for 1GB p.m, Aircel charges 198 INR for 1GB (unlimited*) p.m
*After 1GB, speed becomes 128 kbps :p

Try to clone a prepaid gprs data SIM-kaart.

There is no such thing as an "illegal discussion". I think though that the point has been made clear that there is no *general* way of getting GPRS for free by using any sort of "hacking" (in the broadest sense of the word).

Now, if in India all/some operators use such a crappy system that allows you to connect at no cost, then I think you should ask around *in India* about how they do that (regardless of Maemo/Android/whatever).

Once you know *exactly* what you'd need your N900 to do (e.g. "change IP address to so-and-so after 7.14154 seconds of being connected while the N900 is in portrait mode"), then *WE* can help you with the implementation.

There is one way; you call the operator pay more/upgrade your plan and you'll get it don't worry ;)

Subscribe to a 3G plan. It isn't that costly nowadays  You gotta compromise on one thing atleast - either on speed or on the cost. There is nothing like cheap and best.
