Current Catalogs for Fremantle / N900

The most recent posts date 2015 concerning functioning catalogs for the n900.
The wiki definitely needs a page devoted to current catalogs. since it is 2013 since the last time they were updated ...
And there needs to be some serious revision there.

standard cats
testing cats
devel cats

cssu standard cats
cssu testing cats
cssu devel cats

scratchbox cats
thumb cats

cats cats cats (:D)
hahaha

anyway ...so ...now that things seem relatively stable the last 3 4 years now...and no tumultuous issues happening throwing our cats into disarray ...
I think we should be fine now, to have a static wiki page with all said cats.

(I happen to be bringing this up right now...because ..for forever and a day I have focused work and the majority of my play on the n8x0's and rarely pulled out my n900s to use...
Just recently I decided to pull out and putter with a n900 again...After a very long time away from my n900s ..I find that there isn't anything wiki wise on the cats ...and what there is in the forum is half a decade old ...
So I figure ...a current listing would be a good thing.)

Re: Current Catalogs for Fremantle / N900

There are no updates as such.
All the ones hosted on *.maemo.org are still the same.
All others are mirrors or private and not "officially" provided by maemo.org.
All mirrors are obviously at your own risk, so wouldn't be listed on a page in a wiki page as an official list so to speak.
There are also at your own risk one time .install files floating about, which load all the important catalogues in one click.
Again something you couldn't "officially" recommend but used often and pointed to regularly on IRC.

You also (like many in the past) seem to list repos in a "catch em all" fashion. That is not the idea, you only let the system install the ones your system needs or it may "blow up in your face".
Having one place where "all" the repos are listed generally leads to the less knowledgeable adding everything and wondering why it breaks.

You should really take notice of the instructions given above endsormeans. Not to hassle and wanting everything at once. To give time and search the forums. That way you learn and that is the way this place works :)

ps. Thanks for all the repository info concerning N810 you have given me.

Re: Current Catalogs for Fremantle / N900

I am fully aware of the repercussions of adding "all" ...to any maemo device.
also I am fully aware that it is a use at own risk ...with maemo devices
I have written enough about it concerning the n8x0s

Both should always be stated disclaimers concerning maemo devices .

However it doesn't change anything with having a record ...
in one place...
of a list of available catalogs for the n900

Mirrors come and mirrors go...
I have no interest and think it short sighted to include them.
As I said ...I think it pertinent now that we have a stable (for many years) community ...and hence a stable set of n900 catalogs ...
That they be listed
A post ...here or there...one must dig through ...dating back half a decade is not current or relevant.

Also...
just having a "install" link is not adequate .
I want to see the exact urls
and all pertinent info ....before installation of a catalog.
Manually doing the catalog installation is far more preferable and accurate than a "catch all" which is something I do not believe in at all.
Nor have ever advocated such methods of installation.

I have spent a great deal of time for the n8x0s:
hunted down,
gathered,
studied the contents of,
and listed functioning,
empty,
non-functioning catalogs,
and even further ...have hunted down some thought completely lost ...but in fact were catalogs which have been saved via online archives and their contents preserved there....
but have never stated it wise or advocated installing all of them .
In fact the opposite.

I do believe that folks if stupid enough to not pay attention to the disclaimers bluntly stated...are due whatever trouble they inflict on themselves.

The n8x0s had a plethora of 3rd party catalogs....which make their situation unique....and which took forever to hunt down.

The n900 has a handful of official stable , testing, and devel catalogs ...
what is being asked is not an impossibility ...
nor time consuming past a couple of minutes or hours of effort by a single individual.

And so all that misinformation cleared up.
It does not diminish the necessity of a single page or pages where said n900 catalogs can be found that can be looked at.

and Maemish...I may have spent more years with the n8x0s ...but I am not a newb on the n900 either....
and to boot ...

comeuppance and smart-assery is unbecoming of you...
:D

"comeuppance and smart-assery is unbecoming of you..."

This I didin't get - maybe for my own benefit. And I hope that my ps. made it clear that I didin't think you needed that kind of instructiions given to you but I just liked to ride along with the wave for a moment cause the instructions yout got this time from someone else was so much the same you have given to me.

Maybe our way to understand things humourously just don't meet. Have happened before. And I have to say I was a bit scared when I wrote that cause I wasn't sure how you take it and understand. Living on the edge.

haha...
don't fret Maemish...
after so long of me telling you ...
I think it apt you did the same.

But for one thing..
There were no instructions by sixwheeledbeast.
Also he stated misinformation concerning the work I had done concerning n8x0 catalogs

Re: Current Catalogs for Fremantle / N900

If that is the case this is the only page you need.
http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras
As I say it's not a catch them all situation and all the ones on maemo.org haven't changed.
You will have different repos depending on what version of Maemo you have and when you install "Maemo versionFoo" the correct repos will be added at install.

Re: Current Catalogs for Fremantle / N900

That....is the page I was hunting for.

I couldn't find the sucker .

I am not interested in mirrors running or defunct...
Just wanted the official repos.

My individual problem was that it has been so long since I used my n900s last...
that the catalogs I had WERE the mirrors that were up, due to the Nokia transition.

Thanks for that SWB
:)
