Nokia N810: Wimax Edition on the Tableteer site now

1 Attachment(s)
Apologies if this has been noticed before, but I just looked at the Tableteer site and it has this on the front page (see attachment).

http://tableteer.nokia.com/

Has this actually been officially confirmed?

They must be gearing up for April 1st.

Re: Nokia N810: Wimax Edition

Well, I suppose this counts as an official confirmation of the Wimax tablet!

There's no way to find out anything more about it though... but presumably it's just a normal N810 with a Wimax chip in it?

Hmm... I have a feeling this could be a USA-only release judging from that link, as the other two links lead to European pages for me.

A US-only Wimax tablet perhaps makse sense as Wimax isn't really that big in Europe as far as I know. 3G and 3.5G have been here in Europe for longer than in America and have spread more widely, so perhaps the potential market for Wimax isn't as big. What we need is a 3G/3.5G tablet! ;)

Ah, they have gone with Glasser to match the orange-lit keyboard. That's nice to see.

Why yes, that is the best I can do until they release more information.

What are those 2 additional icons on the sidebar of the tablets? Or is that there now, my n810 is with my wife today :(

Those are just active application icons, nothing special. They're probably meant to demonstrate the multitasking abilities.

They wouldn't call it "N810 Wimax Edition" and make it look physically identical to the N810 if it was technically different to the N810.

And Nokia actually said last year that their Wimax strategy would involve taking an existing tablet and adding a Wimax chip.

I think there definitely will be a wimax accesory for the normal n810 also. Say what?

We've known that there wouldn't be CPU or RAM upgrades (not that they could really upgrade either without going to OMAP3) since the initial announcements came out about an N800 with WiMAX.

Nice find. It would seem that with such a leak, that the releaes might be soon (being that it is the weekend, maybe teh leader web dev is getting a head start so that they dont get a midnight call to push something live - lol)

Re: Nokia N810: Wimax Edition

Actually there might be a way for the current tablets to use Wimax as well. Nokia and others have said they will bring out Wimax-compatible mobile phones, which could act as Wimax modems for the existing tablets. They already act as GSM/3G/CDMA modems, so why not Wimax too?

The Nokia N810 - WiMAX Edition

Quote:

Ok, there's no official announcement yet but Nokia has again let the cat out of the bag a bit too early -- four days too early to be exact as we can probably guess that the new Nokia N810 Internet Tablet - WiMAX Edition will be announced at CTIA at Las Vegas on April 1. Eagle eyed itT member and owner of Internet Tablet School, Krisse found the new image and link (that is not yet active) over at the Nokia Tableteer site. Judging from the image, it looks like it's an N810 copy but in black brushed aluminum, rather than blue. The previously reported BestBuy Nokia ad perhaps shows how the N810 - WiMAX Edition will actually look. No wonder they made a mistake... they're both "N810's." I will be at CTIA on April 1 (only) to cover what ever Internet Tablet news transpire. Stay tuned.

Nokia Internet Tablet Generations:
770: Great 1st gen. device with an RS-MMC (SDHC compatible, w/ s/w upgrade) slot.
N800: Gave us a second (full-SD) slot and full-sized the external one.
...But they stole my screen-cover!!! and wrecked the external buttons!
N810: Gave us GPS and daylight-readable screen, and tippy-tap keyboard.
...But they stole one of my SD slots, and shrunk the other!! And hid my d-pad!
N810 WiMAX edition: Gave us ubiquitous-in-certain-select-square-miles broadband!
...But they took the tippy-tap keyboard back, and stole my d-pad with it!!!!!!! (Check the picture -- no keyboard or d-pad visible )

Yeah, I saw some sites speculating about this too. :)

I am 99.99999999999999999999999999999% certain the keyboard's there but closed, partly because they wouldn't call it the N810 if they'd removed the keyboard, and partly because we saw this tablet before on that "best buy" advert and it had the keyboard open.

Also, from what I understand the wimax hardware isn't that big, it's basically just another chip isn't it? They wouldn't be talking about putting it in phones if it was as big as a keyboard.

Oh, great, go on and ruin it! I was trying to get all the I-hate-physical-switches Apple nuts on board...

Yes, FWIW, I'm positive it has the keyboard. Why it's closed? Probably some marketing dude didn't think things were artistically balanced.

Nokia if you dont act now this class of devices will be lost forever. We all know how imortant it is to ramp up the processor in the internet tablets. WIth the Mid's coming soon.... they will just blow the internet tablets.
Please we need a proper hardware upgrade

Re: The Nokia N810 - WiMAX Edition

Sorry about that Benson. I was enjoying the list anyway though! :)

As far as the "no physical input" stuff, I honestly think there's room in the world for keyboard and non-keyboard devices. There's no such thing as a one-size-fits-all mobile device just like there's no one-size-fits-all car. As soon as the iPhone hype had died down, which portable computing device became the new must-have darling of the media? The eeepc with its full-size keyboard.

I don't think it is. Higher processor speeds mean lower battery life, and bigger batteries mean heavier, bulkier devices.

The vast majority of users want the tablets for things like websites, email and Skype, which the current processor can apparently handle pretty well.

Also don't forget that there HAS been a processor upgrade of a kind, OS2008 increased the clock speed from 330mhz to 400mhz.

As you know by now i really like the tablet. But seriously when i just open contacts and it says loading contacts.... but the moment i press anything it says contacts not responding do you want to close. same with the rss reader. And both the rss reader and the contacts applications are really normal stuff that are expected to work without maxing out the cpu.
It may have been acceptable either with the 770 or with the n800 two years back .But after two years if you still have to wait for the contacts to load before you use any other app..... i dont think that is development of any sort.
I seriously think the tablets are very low on firepower.
I dont want to play 3d games or use photoshop .... i just want to use contacts and rss feed simultaneously..... is it such a huge task?

More like 1 year 3 months. :p

But, yeah, I, too, am ready for a real generational upgrade (OMAP3! OMAP3! OMAP3! texrat has already as much as confirmed it). :D

Well, no, not really. Newer CPUs are more efficient than older ones (particularly OMAP3s versus OMAP2s), so you can upgrade performance without impacting power usage. Look at the upgrade from the 770 to the N800—same battery, same battery life, much, much better performance.

If CPUs only got more powerful at the cost of power usage, then we'd need small nuclear reactors to run modern machines at the power efficiencies of 70s "PCs". :p

. :p

Yeah the post in this thread which says listen to krisse ..... which i think hints at the cpu upgrade coming with the omap3 chips.

Does any one know when can we expect the omap 3 chips to be used in the next generation internet tablets? And what speeds and ram can we expect from omap3?

My personal projections would put it somewhere Q3-Q4 2008, but, as Nokia hasn't said anything on the subject, there's no telling. ;)

You can probably look to the Pandora for similar specs. My money is on something in the 600-700MHz range with 256MB RAM (the Pandora is 128MB, but I don't think Nokia would go that low).
