Extra Decoders Support for N900 - NEW, 0.2

Extra Decoders Support 0.3 - CLICK TO GET NEW INFORMATION

Decoders Support 0.1

It currently doesn't do everything I wanted it to do, but it's a start.

It installs GStreamer decoders and registers some new formats, so that they become supported in the Media Player.

* AC-3 audio support in video files

This doesn't need explanation and was probably the most anticipated format to get support. Works fine, tested.

* MKV support

Yes, it works. This is basic support, which means no options for changing audio streams or subtitles, nothing. Just playback.

Remember that MKV is just a container format, so it has to contain video and audio encoded in a format supported by the N900 (h.264 baseline, DivX/XviD video, MP3, AAC, AC-3 audio). It also does not magically add support for HD resolutions. Works fine, tested with a .mkv sample with XviD video and MP3 audio.

Playback from the file manager still results in asking which application to use, I will try fixing this some time later. Playback from the Media Player is not an issue (.mkv files get indexed as any other video files).

* FLV support

Not tested, but should work.

* MPEG2 Transport Stream support

Not tested, might work. Need feedback.

Plans:

* RM and RMVB demuxing

Any suggestions, questions, trolling?

Maybe a little front-end that would detect/display the currently active codecs/formats or make it possible to selective dis/enable them without uninstalling the package ?

Normal people don't give a crap about which decoders to enable to make their favourite soap opera to play. Some people barely grasp the concept of decoders. And you want a GUI on top of it all? Be my guest...

The decoders-support package takes a negligible amount of space and its sole purpose is to be a meta-package codecs enabler. Look at the source to see how it works. Install one package = have all the codecs people want in one place. Simple.

If you want you are free to go to the terminal, find out which GStreamer packages support which codecs, install them, use the commandline tracker mimetype registering tool to manually add support for containers and other miscellaneous file types and restart the multimedia framework. Then build a GUI on top of it all. Or you can live with a decoders-support package and forget about all this.

So if i try to play a mkv file containing dual audio, it just plays the first audio track or does it say "media not supported"?

I love how cool things like this pop up one after another! :)

I don't know yet if I'll ever be watching movies on the N900, but if I will, possibility to disable subtitles would be high on my wish-list. :)

What did you do for that? If you only registered the .ts, you might fall into these problems that I currently have:

I register video/mp2t and video/mpegts mimetypes. I see that this might not be sufficient then :) I'd appreciate feedback.

I have this installed already, none of my MKV files that I've thrown at it works.

Does this require installing of gstreamer to be used properly? If yes, it would be nice if you can point me towards which gstreamer to get.
