A clear statement in plain English about *why* somebody should become an active member would be nice (also in the wiki).

Why one gets member of a club? Hmm.
Maybe to show its interests in that topic? And to help out to keep it up? Possibly by just stating one's membership, or do some needed work to keep up infra, donate some money, ... (all could be done without membership, but it feels different).

Furthermore we need a legal entity to get HiFo (Maemo trademark, funds) transferred. And a e.V. without member is not an e.V.

I hope that is enough and makes it clear enough.
Else Win7Mac/chemist/juiceme may explain more detailed.

The Board of Directors is elected annually by the General Meeting (regular members).
The Board of Directors consists of regular members. So in order to run as candidate in the Board elections, you need to be regular member.
The General Meeting is the highest jurisdiction in an e.V. by law, it is controlling the Board. The General Meeting can make decisions anytime and in almost any matter (unless limited otherwise), based on the bare majority of all valid votes cast.
