I can do that on my PC if it is connected - but not on my n900. I like to listen to Bob Harris on BBC iPlayer (as that is the only way to hear it the other side of the world). I cannot listen to it using the new Firefox 4 update, because it reckons I need Flash to do so. I don't understand why, as it is a radio broadcast - and when I use the stock n900 browser, it does play without this error (albeit poorly - the stream breaks up intermittently). I also get links to youtube videos on current affairs, and certain activism-related videos I am interested in. If I have access to my PC or laptop, I can watch them there - but it would be nice to be able to watch them on my n900 when I don't have that access, or it is more convenient to use the n900. I am not altogether clear why that requirement is regarded with such disdain. So, do keep trying - if nothing else you will end up more knowledgeable in the process.

Sorry for off-topic, but do you know you can add the following radio stations to the standard N900 media player?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r1.asx
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r2.asx
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r3.asx
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r4.asx

Also, excellent work on Gnash etc - keep it up :)

mischmich try kmplayer. it's a bit fiddly getting the hang of it but it's my go to app for bbc streams. I find it quicker to get a stream up and running.

Oh and if you want to 'listen again' on iplayer, try RadioTimeToGo. You can search for the stream/podcast and when you click play it sends the link for the stream into kmplayer and starts playing.

This is going way off topic, but thanks. I'm afraid most of this above means nothing to me. I tried going to the website on the laptop, but could not get anything to play. It identified half-a-dozen windows-based media players that weren't on my laptop, and of those that were (including kmplayer, mplayer, gnome media player, banshee, etc., it only picked up VLC player. All I want to do is to load the BBC iPlayer web-page in Firefox on the n900, and select a radio broadcast from earlier in the week, and play it. I can do that on my laptop, using Chrome, but am stumped why this should be a problem on the n900 using Firefox.

I tried the live stream from the website on the n900, and it doesn't list any compatible media player, suggesting installing VLC. If I try loading the live stream in kmplayer, it says it does not have the necessary codec to play the stream. On the laptop, I can't get the live stream to play in VLC or kmplayer. However, the 4 live links provided above by Jedi, they do work OK on both. It looks like the RadioTime site is geared up primarily for windows.

Sorry I meant the RadioTimeToGo app for the n900.

Just use microB: it works perfectly well on the iPlayer (unlike the recent firefox mobile V4 which is - on my device at any rate - unusably slow). I just used microB to play a bit from last weeks "desert island discs", which streamed fine with no buffering.You *may* need to have tweakflashplayer (from the repo's) installed ... I have it, so it may be required, I don't know.

It's possible to have firefox (at least, the old v1.1) use the microB flash plugin by enabling plugins in firefox via about:config, but the recent firefox mobile V4 has - on my device anyway - got such cripplingly bad performance that I have stopped using it entirely as it's effectively useless & flash would kill it So, I don't know whether flash plugin works with v4, but if you really have an unavoidable need to only listen to iplayer radio on your n900 via firefox mobile V4, feel free to enable plugins & give it a try.

I went over to mozilla's support forums, and they recommended the following:

In the address bar, type:

about:config

This will bring up firefox's configuration menu. A search bar will appear on that of that tab, along with a frakload of variables. You should look for the following ones:

toolkit.browser.cacheRatioHeight = 3000 -> Change it to 2000
toolkit.browser.cacheRatioWidth = 2000[/i] -> See below; I leave it unchanged

The toolkit.browser.cacheRatioWidth variable has a value of 2000, and while the mozilla support staff person who oriented me mentioned a value of 1200, based on former builds, I left it at 2000; if you check out fennec nightly builds, you'll see that they were way faster than unconfigured RC1; it appears the above configuration changes are the culprit, they were changed from the recommended values above in more recent builds. I'm not sure if setting toolkit.browser.cacheRatioWidth to 1200 will improve speed, and I'm too lazy to check it out myself ;) , since I got RC1's speed on par with previous builds, but feel free to check it out.

Btw, I can run youtube videos and browse 10 tabs with a little performance hit, and open about 15 tabs with no flash content, with no performance hit whatsoever; if I add overclocking to the mix, things go even more smoothly. microB is facing retirement, as it stands :) .

I might as well make a topic out of this... I've posted that one before, and it seems people have missed out.

In order to get flash working in firefox 4 RC1, follow this steps:

Just as above, go to FF's configuration tab by typing.

about:config

Here's what you be looking for; set:

plugin.disable to false
and
dom.ipc.plugins.enabled to true (if it isnt already)

Above info comes from this thread.

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=69206

There you go. Btw, I tested iplayer on RC1 with above configs... Works like a charm, try it out. :)

Re: watch flash 10.1 videos with hardware acceleration on maemo with GNASH? maybe maybe

Thanks Number41. That does the trick. Takes a while to get there, but once it does it does the job. And I can do other stuff on another tab at the same time, go back to other tabs, etc. Still can't get video - but that is probably because of the BBC restrictions on iPlayer. The only way I get UK TV on the laptop is setting up Tor on firefox and using anonymous proxy to access iPlayer. I tried it out on YouTube, and that seems to work too - Gary Moore singing 'Still got the Blues' on my n900 right now. Thanks a million. Dunno what version of flash it is using, but as long as it works - and doesn't keep telling me I need to install flash - I'm happy. Very impressive.
