Thank You I'm Really Waiting For this Day As My Intensions where for Skype from day one :) im a upgrade from 770 and would buy another 800 today :)

Will Skype for n800 allow video calls or is it voice-only?

And, slightly OT, short of Skype, what clients can I make video calls to? I've gone n800-n800 using google talk, but I only know one other n800 owner so this is limiting ;>. I really want to make a video call to a pc/webcam. Is this an option I've missed?

Skype? How about the dam n800 case Nokia promised? Video calling would really top off the device, I really hope they implement it.

I believe he meant the cover Nokia had advertised that hasn't yet become available, but your point is well taken. ;)

And I wouldn't hold my breath for Skype. It may be out soon, but then, it may not. It'll be released when it's ready.

What sources would this be? I'm pretty sure that June 11 is the first day of WWDC where steve jobs is giving the keynote presentation

I'd love to believe you, but everyone these days seems to have their "sources"......do you think it's reliable?

Someone who works on the Nokia "blog relations site" commented that a Skype pr person told her that Skype was still being readied for the N800, which I was glad to hear.

Oh yeah, it's still in work, but be wary of dates provided in this forum. ;)

There are other cool developments coming, but the casual user won't have much awareness of them. :evil grin:

Yeah Skype is ready... just finshing off a few things... I know a very high ranking woman who works at Nokia and she said the upgrade is scheduled for June 11, 2007.

Always seems to happen to me... I'm heading to Europe for a month-long trip starting May 26. I guess I'll have to be satisfied with high roaming rates on my mobile. Sigh.

Ever eared of Gizmo? It is a very good alternative to Skype and it is already available on N800 :)

Or... Just update your OS to the new version once in Europe. I do not see any difficult in doing this being in Europe instead of USA (at least, I am in italy and could update without problems.. ;) )

On Ebay I just bought a black logitech playgear case for about 11 bucks with shipping- (Hong Kong)

...should be a nice simple hack.

Thanks. I've got Gizmo and it works fine - I guess I can use that. As for updating it while in Europe, I'm going to be on the road and not near a PC where I can download and do the update. I don't suppose there's a way to self-update an N800?

Why don't you take a linuxlive- cd with you, then you can go to a shop where they make cd's from your digicam and ask politely to use their pc for a while... just boot a live system, dl the bin to your mmc - or use their hdd - and you should have everything you need. Try small shops where the owner is there, or go to an internet cafe.

I suppose Skype can be installed as separate app once it is out, but then I am an ignorant fool :D if Skype's all you need, that is. For that all u need is WiFi access point.

Hmm I just talked couple of days ago to one person inside Nokia and it was said that new release is scheduled for week 26. And yes Skype was mentioned. So lets see what happens.

Week 26 is the week June 25 through to July 1 - my bet is Friday 29 June which is the final working day of Q2! :)

There's now a more general "Skype for Linux Team Updates" blog entry proclaiming that "Mobile devices such as Mobile Internet Devices (MID) and NetBooks are the future for Linux".

No word on the Nokia Internet Tablets or whether video calling might eventually be supported by this planned "MID" release of Skype.

Skype forum staff aren't exactly very responsive on their Linux forum but perhaps they'd answer direct enquiries by Linux/Maemo developers or Nokia people (if they are interested).
