Pimp my N8x0-Part 2

I noticed a while back that when trying to install programs... missing bits were an issue... libs seemed missing...other oddness as well.
While I haven't exactly pinpointed the cause. Naturally I did take note of the originating circumstances...and ..changed a few... shall I say ...."habits" ..that I just grew less mindful about.
Missing libs and not being able to install them I found more predominant when after reflashing my device..whether n800 or n810.
I took note over time when I had this prob and when I didn't.
Perhaps those far more knowledgeable on the issue than I can weigh in as well

(Also considering that when I 1st started out way-back-when... cloning and formatting and etc... I scoured (I don't know how many!) threads...as a consequence there are for the n8x0 devices many methods...this takes one of those methods....one of the easiest..and I've included what I believe to be essential info to make this a one-stop-shop thread :D)

Here is what my best suggestions are...
After doing a clean and problem free reflashing of the latest NOKIA (notice I said latest NOKIA :D) Diablo Image. The 1st thing I do personally is open the Applications-Tools-Add/Remove Repositories and enable the disabled extras. Let it update. Note: Try not to disturb the process. If at any point ....ANYTIME...you interrupt the repo update process...I suggest simply exiting all applications and shut down then restart your device. Interrupting the update process..seems to REALLY interrupt the update process :D ....making available repos unavailable.. So once you've restarted your device...Go back to the Add/Remove Repositories add the disabled extras repo ....let it do its thing....go in and 1st thing I do is install what is called by the App Manager "rootsh" (otherwise known as gainroot ...root..and by the n800/n810 App Menu "xterm" ).... then exit the Applications Manager.

From here there are 2 paths one can take. Repo wise it ends the same.

The Quick and Easy:

A- Install ASUI

http://asui.garage.maemo.org/download.html

DON'T FORGET to do this ...it updates the ASUI. (It isn't in official updates but auouymous (asui's creator) states he's used this update for years without any negative impact...if you want install and try it out...if there are issues or bugs of any kind contact auouymous asap so they can be sussed out)
start up xterm (rootsh) and type :
> sudo gainroot (hit enter)
(then type)
> asui uu ; asui dit ; asui dis ; asui da ; asui dc (hit enter)

let it do it's thing a few minutes and it should be done. Restart your device and it should be updated :D
All hail auouymous giver of goodies! :D

B- install CSSU, (link to install info on ASUI page) ( and already having the gainroot prerequisite you don't need to reinstall that) and having the three pertinent prerequisites done....

C- now...install DIABLO TURBO (which is THE latest firmware O.S. for n800/n810. from 2010)....(not the Nokia diablo firmware latest which is from 2008)

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=69740

after that you're done...head to REPO INSTALLATION.

THE SLIGHTLY HARDER BUT MORE FULFILLING PATH:
IF YOUR INTENT IS TO CLONE THE OS TO CARD.
THE FOLLOWING I SUGGEST
( and I heartily suggest it..it's the method I use ...) primarily for the reason that the last official diablo version and penguinbait's version of cloning are literally "just" compatible..adding to the last offical diablo install with asui, cssu, and or diablo turbo and or any other programs or libraries AND THEN cloning MAY compromise that tenuous compatibility and give you all kinds of ugly...
pb's cloning tools were never really meant for that....
so it is best to clone from as bare bones a state as possible and then from the installed cloned state upgrade and install asui, cssu, diablo turbo and all the fun stuff you wish ...

TO BEGIN...This is a little more involved:
From the pristine reflashed state...
with only the extra repo and rootsh/gainroot/xterm installed...
Now is the time to knuckle down and play.
Grab penguinbait's console tools v1

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=25714
and for ref.
http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...&postcount=168

IF PENGUINBAITS CONSOLE TOOLS V1 LINKS ARE NON-FUNCTIONAL YOU WILL FIND THE NECESSARY DEB HERE IN THE GOOGLE DRIVE OF THIS POST.

The n8x0 Google Drive Treasure Vault.
https://drive.google.com/drive/folde...J9?usp=sharing

...read...read..read. Read some more...Think you are done reading...nope... :D...read some more
use the easy method....clone and copy your pristine os onto a sd card.

(P.S. VERY IMPORTANT: when starting up xterm (gainroot) CHANGE THE FONT SIZE DOWN TO 8 ... OTHERWISE THE FONT SIZE GIVES YOU TROUBLE WITH CONSOLE TOOLS INTERFACE...LET CONSOLE TOOLS DO IT'S THING AND GIVE IT THE TIME TO DO IT"S WORK ...PATIENCE.. :) .ALSO IT IS BEST TO CLONE TO THE INTERNAL SD CARD SLOT SO YOU CAN USE THE EXTERNAL FOR REMOVABLE STORAGE..DON'T GO PULLING IN AND OUT YOUR CLONED CARD & EXPECT YOUR DEVICE TO WORK PROPERLY AFTERWARD. ALSO IF TRYING TO TRANSFER FILES TO OR FROM THE (UNCLONED) EXTERNAL STORAGE TO A WINDOWS PC BOOT UP IN THE PRISTINE DIABLO. SINCE DIABLO TURBO ON THE RUNNING INTERNAL SD CARD IS LINUX YOU WILL NOT SEE YOUR EXTERNAL STORAGE ON YOUR WINDOWS PC ...OR ATTEMPTED FILE TRANSFERS WILL FAIL...AND/OR YOU WILL BE INFORMED BY YOUR WINDOWS PC THAT THE CARD(S) ARE CORRUPT OR UNFORMATTED WHEN IT IS NOT. WINDOWS LOVES LINUX ...EH? :D......
FILE TRANSFERS GOING PROPERLY AND SMOOTHLY YOU ARE DONE.
USE "WINDOWS REMOVE USB DEVICE" IN YOUR ICON TRAY ALWAYS BEFORE PULLING THE CABLE OUT...NOT DOING SO HAS POTENTIAL UNPLEASANTNESS FOR YOUR CARDS.... ONCE YOU UNHOOK FROM YOUR WINDOWS PC AND REBOOT YOUR N800 BACK INTO DIABLO TURBO YOU WILL SEE YOUR TRANSFERRED FILES :) )

((before using console tools If all you want is the os on the card...2gb will do ....mind...4-8-16 or 32gb is MORE than enough card ..8gb and over gives you enough for Diablo Turbo and a few more O.S.'s on the internal (excepting certain instances where it makes more sense to have one O.S. on either internal or external or both)... and you'll have adequate storage as well.
64gb and 128gb cards can be problematic...some 64gb cards don't play well...and I've tested a brand of 128gb card with some limited success ...so far)).......concerning sd cards...for your external storage get 32gb class 4....may seem like under-kill ...but the 32gb will work and class 4 is a more stable class for various purposes related to the n8x0. Higher classes may or will give you hassles. Adata sd variant is a good model...cheap too....and there are others. For your internal...no less than 2gb...I suggest.
PB had a great rundown on sd card partition setup...here it is for this all-in-one reference thread (:D) ...mind ext3 will work in the stead of ext2...and when doing the pbeasy method it is done automajestically (:D) by the cloning procedure...as well the boot ext values are predetermined by the fat and swap values you input during the procedure. Voila!

1GB
1: 64MB FAT
2: 872GB EXT2 (BOOT)
3: 64MB SWAP

2GB
1: 128MB FAT
2: 1.75GB EXT2 (BOOT)
3: 128MB SWAP

4GB
1: 256MB FAT
2: 3.5GB EXT2 (BOOT)
3: 256MB SWAP

6GB
1: 384MB FAT
2: 5.255GB EXT2 (BOOT)
3: 384MB SWAP

8GB
1: 512MB FAT
2: 6.6GB EXT2 (BOOT)
3: 512MB SWAP

If you notice the pattern 'tween 2gb,4gb and 8gb setups...extrapolation from that ...and 16gb and 32gb are obvious.

Anyway...back to the process....
Then ...boot up in the cloned Diablo on your internal sd card...install ASUI, CSSU and then DIABLO TURBO. (A,B, and C of the very 1st section on this page.)...when you are done all that is left is to head to REPO INSTALLATION. after which install whatever pleases you :)

REPO INSTALLATION.

As mentioned earlier...try not to disturb the application manager's repo update process...the more repo's added...the more time it needs to process ALL that info..and it is a lot. It's not harmful to interrupt it. Just more expedient not to.

Before clicking the convenient install ALL button at gronmayer's repo page...

http://www.gronmayer.com/it/

important to remember to do before proceeding... ....I suggest going into the app manager repo enabler/disabler and delete ALL repos there. (excepting CSSU ...don't delete it if you have it...otherwise disregard.. ) 1 other repo.....(Nokia's in fact)..will not be deletable. That's fine. The reason is the "Select All One-Click-Install" of Gronmayer's tries to install those same repos...and consequently the repo install... conflicts...the results being... unsavory...in the form of pertinent repos being non responsive and a full repo deletion and re-installation necessary

THEN click INSTALL ALL at gronmayer's page...be patient...follow the prompts. It will take a lot longer to update with all the repos now to process and all the subsequent libraries inside each.
Once done go back into app manager...go to the repos
and you will find a list of repos that didn't make it...that failed in fact. You can delete them...or simply disable them. I personally opt for disabling...either way it does shorten your wait time on your device not having it try to populate libraries it can't find.
My next and final suggestion is going through each repo find the couple that are fremantle specific (it states fremante in fact in the dialogue box) and disable them...take note which ones they are for future ref. in case you would like to enable them in the future. The reason I do this is that here seems to be a root or at the least "tendril" :D issue concerning libs issues and program issues. The fremantle libraries seem to interact with the diablo libraries in such a way as to increase one's frustration level. Deleting these repos seems extreme. Disabling them seems expedient in case there is something down the road you need from them...just re-enable the fremantle repos

Technically you are done. If all went smoothly ...the proper platform is in place...the proper repos have been added with subsequent proper libraries...and hopefully...probs with program installations are gone...and you now have scads and scads and scads of programs you never ever saw before.
:)

UPDATE:
I thought I should include this addendum since I did this Uber walkthrough I spent a great deal of time hunting down and trying to find all those broken catalogs what happened to them and if they could be salvaged and brought back into the proverbial maemo fold and be usable again. Well the downswing is ...to make them all function and be convenient to install it would mean contacting the owners / maintainers of said catalogues and getting the ok to have them put into maemo Extras or extras-devel and of course that means getting our fellow members and board to help. The upswing is I did a ton of hunting and searching and found most of them and for the most part excepting a few ..they are still installable. But the longer they stay in such a fragile state the more likely they will become irretrievable .. I suggest petitioning for preserving them. Talk to your reps. It would be a tragedy to lose so much good stuff and hard work by so many.
Anywho... In the interim here is the link to the topic of those broken and lost catalogues and all their forgotten fabulous programs which can be still utilized. read and check out the 9 jpg's. ESPECIALLY pay attention to what I have written in the margins in those jpg's...

For even more available programs and catalogs long thought gone and dust..please go the lost gronmayer catalog thread here at Pimp My N8x0-Part 3.

Re: Adding Repositories to your n800/n810 and the potential weirdness involved

Hello,

I was trying to follow the above superb procedure, however I got to a sudden stop right at the beginning: I was unable to download penguinbait's console-tools.

That brings me to two questions:

Are both of penguinbait's sites permanently down?

Has anybody here a copy of the mentioned console-tools.deb, that he or she is willing to share?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Re: Adding Repositories to your n800/n810 and the potential weirdness involved

It is good to see new people using a great device.
Welcome! :D
It is unsettling concerning penguinbait's site...for now his site appears to be down...contacting him to find out if he is going to bring it back is pretty important...He had a lot of cool stuff on there to mess with the n8x0 models.KDE ....realllll juicy stuff. I personally do hope it is just maintenance that the site is down...
So ordinarily you would use your n800 and navigate to his console tools v1 page I linked ...and don't just click on either of the two links....tap and hold....menu pops up....save target as...and save it to your external. ....go to the folder open it up and click and your app manager will open and install console tools v1.
BUUUTTTTT....won't work at the moment....so ...other methods are required.

- post ....new members have to post at least 10 postings in the forum...and that allows you to (finally and permanently) private message members ...I don't suggest posting your email openly anywhere...so get posting... :D
post here...10 posts ...at least 10 chars long...then message me...
and I'll email you the console tools....(didn't make copies of all his cool stuff....I should have if he is gone for good....but I did make one of console tools v1 :D )

yours- EorM

Just hunted him down on twitter and asked him what's up...so hopefully it is just temp....otherwise ...I do hope he has all the pertinent work stored ...getting copies and hosting them would be a good idea...cross fingers...It would be a huge loss for his work to disappear.

Re: Adding Repositories to your n800/n810 and the potential weirdness involved

Thanks a lot for the answer.

Yes, it is a nice, really nice device indeed :). Unfortunately, for some reason it hasn't been retailed in my country, so I had to source mine off ebay - it has arrived without the original charger. Now I'm trying to find the best option to charge and so far nokia's usb to 2mm cable plus generic usb wall wart work best. It charges n800's original battery (quite aged) but it fails to charge a generic li-ion replacement. So not so much battery life so far ;).

Thanks for the 10 post tip, I'll try to reach it in some reasonable time.

Re: Adding Repositories to your n800/n810 and the potential weirdness involved

Softwarewise I'm still on nokia's 2008.43.7, which seems a bit limited, but usable.

I haven't installed much programs apart from a few staples, mainly due to the limited flash and a hope for soon mmc boot ;).

I do really hope that penguinbait's goodies will be back:).

3 down, still 7 to go..

Re: Adding Repositories to your n800/n810 and the potential weirdness involved

I suggest steering clear of alternative batteries...get original bp-5l batts you can find them refurbed where a company has "rejuiced" them....up to around 95% -ish ...and cheap too...on ebay....

Also there is a thread around here I read that is a wicked hack (I'll try to find it)....wiring up the n800 batt. connectors to a usb cable / charger ...for the ultimate in going permanently battery-less!

Re: Adding Repositories to your n800/n810 and the potential weirdness involved

Yes, it seems that in case of batteries, brand matters. I have munched through quite a few threads regarding the subject and tried to pick the best alternative, but the result was as described above - no charging. Maybe higher speced charger would jump start it, but I'm not willing to risk any non-nokia charger.

Thanks for the tip, I'll look for the refurbs .

Going battery-less seems interesting, especially in case of more stationary applications, like long term in-car use. I'm not sure how well n800 responds to prolonged use while plugged in - usually it's the best way, long-termwise, to kill a battery.

Re: Adding Repositories to your n800/n810 and the potential weirdness involved

I'm still quite a few posts short of the PM limit, so I use this opportunity to ask what sorts of improvement in general I could expect from going beyond the stock 2008.43.7 - apart from the obvious access to a huge amount of new software?

Are there any power management benefits to be gained (as of now I'm getting around 2h of battery life during mixed use with BT/WiFi on)?

What are web browsers of your choice to be used on n800? Is it possible to tweak the microweb with, say greasemonkey, enough to browse the web with javasript turned on?

I know that some of the questions above have been pondered in other threads here, but most of them are two to three years old and I hope that some improvement might have happened in the meantime:D.

Re: Adding Repositories to your n800/n810 and the potential weirdness involved

Hi EorM,

I think I need some clarification with relation to use of SD cards with diablo turbo. If I understood correctly, SD cards are accessible via USB only if booted from internal flash - I understand, that the internal card will become inaccessible if system is booted from it, but why is the external being dropped? Is nokia's diablo doing some samba magic to present the cards as mass storage, that diablo turbo is unable to replicate?

Best, nasve

Re: Adding Repositories to your n800/n810 and the potential weirdness involved

Lotta questions there :D

1st - the battery post hack is meant more as a stationary rather than travel...power surging stuff and all with car charging equip I believe.

2nd- there are a lot options for web...each have their plus and minus...greasemonkey ain't bad...iceweasel is good too.

3rd- the best options for powersaving are
a- set your illumination to 33ish (via ASUI)
b- disable audio (via ASUI) can't hear a thing though :D
c- disable BT and wifi (via ASUI)
d- set your customized battery settings also
e- disable the media player from doing refreshing via the ASUI (this cuts alot of waste)
f- use kilikali (music) and mplayer(video)... for a smaller footprint
there are more ...that just don't come to mind at the moment.
All this (but killing the audio :D) should get you back up to 7 hours/ 10 days(standby) use ...As things stand...the fixes and conservation is worth updating to diablo turbo...since right now you are running with all the lights on...the microwave running. ..air-conditioner blasting....jacuzzi bubbling....the heat cranked up...and everything else too :D ...it's no wonder you are getting only 2 hours....ALSO...if you turn it on...leave it on...power on and off sucks at the battery every time by 2hour jolts...so better to leave it on.

4th-It's the fact that it is the file system types...windows does not play at all with linux partition types...ie ext2,3,4 ...linux can play with fat32 and ntfs...so it is allllll about the types in your windoze pc partition, the n8x0 machines partition and the sd card os partition....their ordering and how they interact....windows insists that fat or ntfs must be 1st in the order and there can only be 1 partition and will not recognize the others.Hence simply won't see it if connected via n8x0 sd card...it's there...just can't get at it.
Also win doesn't like the whole play nice with other partitions in the sandbox bully thingy :D...So on the n800 (at least) your pc can recognize the on board n800 file systems because they have been set up to recognize and play well with windows...If you multiboot esp off an sd card you are not playing by windows rules so it won't play. It has nothing to do with nokia or linux or maemo....or some wizardry getting things to work...it's..just windows and the ugly methods that are truly inadequate today that you cope with.Think of it ...like this...An OS is like a house...the partitions (inside the house) are like rooms (in any given room there may be another possibly different OS or many...ie. multibooting....box within a box idea)...to get to the bathroom of a house you have to enter the house...go through rooms to get to the bathroom...windows interaction with the os on sd card doesn't understand the process...doesn't get that there can be more than one room in the house...why it has to go "through" the house... why it can't just go straight to the bathroom...so you see it ALLLL "Depends" :D :D ...get it!?!?! "Depends" ? haheehe...oh my...well those who know of the adult diaper will get it...ahhh just when you think bodily function humour was dead eh? :D ...anyway back to topic....and conclusion...So...this ultimately is why linux works the way it does and windows works the way it does. How this relates directly to your n8x0 is that your device can play with both parties...you just gotta know the rules of the game they play. As an admonishment...I don't detest windows..I love xp tablet!...use it for alot of artwork on my convertible tablets when I have time 'tween carving...usually over the winter....but windows (sigh)...they could try to be more compat and less combat with linux...linux ultimately is the future...they won the desktop wars...pretty much the laptop wars... the smartphone wars... the same...hell....when nasa replaces it's systems with linux.....THAT says something. They need to work with...not compete..anyway...time to stop droning on.
The benefits of your system ON the sd card are multitudinous :D love the word...saves system wear and tear on device...increases space for more storage and programs...you can copy your os for safe keeping on or off you device....and with ext3 and ext4 types if your system boinks ...it simply reboots and repairs it...alllllll on it's lonesome....for myself ...lately I simply have a 16gb card internally for the os and programs I want to have...my easily removable external storage I pack with the compleat works of shakespeare by the bbc actors guild (video)....the prisoner...etc..ALLL my fav movies...music ...Audio books, plays and Old time radio, and on another I have ALLLLL my books....not sure how many way...way up there...in the hundred thousands....from my faves on sacred geometry, gnosticism and hermetic studies to the finest in ranxerox ... :D ... From my perspective it is worth it.

Re: Adding Repositories to your n800/n810 and the potential weirdness involved

Hello,

Thank you very much for the ultracomprehensive reply:D. I was just wondering how the flash system is presenting the cards via usb (it unmounts them as soon as the cable is plugged in). Now I see that I haven't had a slightest idea how it works.

To get it short: booting off sd excludes it and to get to the cards (or would it be only external one?) via usb, one has to boot off flash. Still the external card can be formatted in fat, right?

I'm quite used to linux and windows interaction, but in all cases the gentoo machine was the host I mounted all the shares on. I have never tried it the other way around.

Best,

Re: Adding Repositories to your n800/n810 and the potential weirdness involved

O mymymymymy ....yes the method of cloning the OS indeed results in having a fat32 partition on it but that is only one of the partitions on the cloned card .
As far as the internal OR external goes it is smart to make sure that it is fresh to start with by formatting it on device...(failing that using the panasonic sd format tool software ....easily found on the web)...use the file manager... highlight the external card and the dropdown menu at the top should then offer the option to format....can't remem...don't think it's in fat32...I think it is ntfs...don't quote me on that one...just got up...it's 6 in the morning and I haven't finished my 1st cup of coffee yet :D So I'm notttt quiteeee at my shiningest brightest moment just yet :D

When hooked up to your pc normally with no partitioned fancy cards...Win. will see 2 very normal cards your internal and external.

Partition and "OS-ify" (:D) your internal and when hooked up to your pc normally you will still see your internal and external....but you will only see on the internal what Win. is "able" to see (that fat32 partition I mentioned).

Boot up your internal copied OS AND hook it up to your pc and you bypass the onboard system and Windows has a hard time again with the linux partitions on the internal card but again has no prob with the normal formatted external card.

Unless you want multiple O.S.'s on multiple cards....my best suggestion is to put all your O.S's on the internal card and use whatever space left over for linux based storage (or whatever for that matter)...and use the external for windows accessible based storage (and if an (n800) alternate internal linux os (you have put on your card) or external linux pc can see the external card it is a bonus)....ALSO it is easier to pull the sd card out WHILE in use on the external and just pop 'er in your pc and tranfer files that way rather than on the n800. I never suggest pulling the internal out when you have mucked about with partitioning and multibooting and such on it...unless you clean off the ENTIRE device first....goodness knows what catastrophe and demons may issue forth :D

Oh yes....hmmm ...Can't remem. if I mentioned when cloning...keep it simple....just have the internal card in...not both....saves confusion and conflicts when cloning.

There we goeth...:D
Betty's yer Aunt and Bob's yer Uncle. Done... :D
unless more questions...I need to slurp some coffee at the moment.

Re: Adding Repositories to your n800/n810 and the potential weirdness involved

Good... you got it ....You will probably mess with it a few times until you get it the way you want it....it isn't that people's explanations on how to do it are lacking....it's the method the programs to clone are set up for compat. ...ease of use and simplest methods of achieving the desired goal...when creating such programs... specifics must be applied....hence explanations no matter how detailed do not compare to the subjective experience of the user.... ie. the instructions and advice I and others have given may seem obtuse right now...but when you are doing the process there is a simple 1-2-3 logic to it all...if you encounter errors or problems...simply stop ...exit... power down...reflash the firmware and start over...takes a heartbeat. I'm sure you will do it a few times until the last "AH-HA!" revelation hits (you'll have a few along the way) esp. if you think in windows and linux and now maemo-linux .This is why I suggest having all the necessary packages downloaded (pre cloning and diablo-turbo updating stuff and including web links to specific pages)....on your external sd card...that way...if (rather when :D) you must reflash...you can easily access/ transfer whatever you need as needed without having to painstakingly go through the whole ugly downloading processes over and over and over.

When you finally knuckle down to do it...on your pc have multiple windows open with all the pages for installing whatever immediately to hand...so you can easily reference (CSSU page...ASUI page in garage...diablo-turbo installation page in talk and the page in garage...pb console tool v1 install procedure page in talk and the newbie faq linked page in bold type there...etc..) everything in it's order...THAT is a big big help when doing all this the 1st time. After the n-teenth time doing it all it'll be old hat to you and you'll be thinking gadzooks!...that really was pretty easy (though at the time it may as well seem like trying to climb Kilimanjaro with eyes closed, backwards, and upside down :D) and you'll be going from reflashing to full diablo-turbo and multibooting in under an hour...

Good day everybody :)

Just a short update: I have performed all steps till point #3 (everything went as described, the only variation was that I've decided to drop swap partition for now - I use virtualmem in the obligatory fat partition). After point #3 and before gronmayer, I've cloned my system to usb drive, just to have some convenient restoring point :).

Right now I'm chewing through the repositories.

Re: Adding Repositories to your n800/n810 and the potential weirdness involved

Wellywellwell.
Nope penguinbait.com/ tablethacker.com is gone again.
She's down.
I did manage (I think...dunno... never answered back to me personally...) to message him the last time around via twitter and told him his site was down and that there were still people interested in his work...but couldn't view it.
He did get it back up and running since...

Perhaps he does not desire to maintain it any longer...
This time around now... someone else can bug him that his site is down.
Me bugging him twice in a few months concerning the same issue?
I have no desire to be a nuisance.

His pages are available ...for now anyway...through wayback machine. awkward yes...but they are there.

Best suggestion is someone ask him to at least put it up temporarily for the purposes of mirroring ...
so if he is no longer interested in maintaining it ..at least others can.

That way... the valuable pages are not lost.
Ah..the flickering flame is back....penguinbait.

I believe I have scoured the site...found some pages not saved ...don't think I missed anything...

so until someone mirrors the site ...tablethacker.com (I hope) is completely available on wayback machine.

Re: Adding Repositories to your n800/n810 and the potential weirdness involved

So the console tool links are down but I'm also unable to download with N810 from your google drive because the stock browser in N810 is too outdated. I hesitate what to do cause you said it would be good to clone a fresh N810 anything else than rootsh installed. It seems that at this point I should yet need an updated browser. What would be the best way to proceed?

Re: Adding Repositories to your n800/n810 and the potential weirdness involved

the very first thing I suggest in the walkthrough.

I suggested that you open the links in your PC browser..
have them all there and refer to the pages and download what is necessary as you need them.

At no point have I ever implied suggested or insisted that a person should try to use the stock or any other browser on the n8x0 itself to browse search or download .

You should be using your pc to download what needs to be downloaded ...
put what you need to into a folder ..
then connect your pc to your n8x0 and drag and drop the folder into your n8x0
pretty straightforward.

Any other way and you are just making it harder for yourself.

Re: Adding Repositories to your n800/n810 and the potential weirdness involved

As well this topic has zero to do with repo cat issues...
your issues are flashing, cloning and setting up diablo turbo on your n810 external sd card

So this convo should be occurring ...
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=94294

not here ...
where the topic is about repo catalogs...installation and issues....
you are nowhere near this last stage yet of even dealing with catalog issues.
Deal with the issues at hand.
In the thread which most certainly it has relevance for .

Yes, chose a wrong thread (again after you guided me away from the other wrong thread) but happily decided to pm you and you guided me through. Thanks a lot! Running Diablo turbo on N810 with catalogues in place. You're the man.

Re: Adding Repositories to your n800/n810 and the potential weirdness involved

I followed the tutorial on partitioning the internal sd card. However, I missed this when reading through the first post of this thread. I had set 128MB FAT and 128MB SWAP.

8GB
1: 512MB FAT
2: 6.6GB EXT2 (BOOT)
3: 512MB SWAP

Is there any way I can expand from 128MB FAT/SWAP to 512MB FAT/SWAP?

I already cloned the OS and installed diablo turbo on the internal sd card. Wasn't sure if I can increase the partition size after I had already cloned the os. Thanks

Edit: I am using a 8GB SD card (internal).

Re: Adding Repositories to your n800/n810 and the potential weirdness involved

you could do 512 of swap....and 512 of fat.
it would mean little difference to the max swap of 256 applicable...
I believe...
you would gain no benefit ...since the system is meant to handle a max of 256

You may also run into issues due to the doubling of the size of the fat and swap....you wish to do....I cannot say for certain ..

but with an 8gb card....
if it were me...
I would max the fat and swap out to 256 ...
save the rest of the card space for program installation.

If you didn't do the entire walkthrough of mine...but just noticed it now...

I would suggest you do it from beginning to end ...
It is a piece of cake...
It is good practice...
and in the end is foolproof..
and if you screw up anywhere in the process ...you know it immediately and can easily redo it.

Re: Adding Repositories to your n800/n810 and the potential weirdness involved

What if I were to get a bigger card like 32gb? Should I keep it 256mb for the fat and swap?
