Buying N900 in 2016?

Hello,
I am new here, just registered to ask.
I have want to buy N900 in India and it is only available on amazon.com and ebay.com

I will be using it for Penetration Testing purposes as its wifi supports promiscuous mode it is great for wardriving and with Kali the possibilities are endless.
What I want to ask is, is it worth to buy Nokia N900 for ~200$ in 2016? or are there any other devices which maybe able to fulfill these roles?
Also from where should I buy Amazon or Ebay or any other place?
I'll also be visiting a 2nd hand device market in Mumbai to find this device.
This is my 1st N900 and I love this device nothing like it has been made till date.

Re: Buying N900 in 2016?

There are no new devices, so all N900's are second-hand.
I'd say the going rate is about 100eur max, no reason to pay 200 unless you get other stuff bundled in and it is absolutely spotless.

Not true. on polish selling sites, like http://www.allegro.pl there are still new unit available for around 400-500 polish zlotys, (around 150 eur).
Even bought one lately and after deeper testing it is legit.

Re: Buying N900 in 2016?

Ebay is usually pretty expensive. I think in some countries the N900 didn't sell well and this leads to higher prices on ebay (being a global marketplace).
Based on previous posts about prices I think buying one in Europe, and preferably on a local virtual marketplace is the best approach.
You could ask a member of talk.maemo to buy one locally and ship it to India.
I have never paid more than 30 Euro's for mine and some of them are in excellent condition.

Re: Buying N900 in 2016?

200$ for a N900 i think is way too much. Here in my country N900 is quite rare but still used one's in good and perfect working condition are available for about 50-70$.

Re: Buying N900 in 2016?

I myself have 4 of them. Eying for more if one surfaces for a decent price. There's one for 45€ but it's in other city, thus there might be shipping fee for maybe upto 8 eur.

Re: Buying N900 in 2016?

Just as an update I found and bought an used N900 near me. It is in very good condition except for battery which needs replacement and two cracks between touch & display.

Sadly at september 15th my bag was stolen containing 2 nokia n9, 1 n900, 1 Lg optimus G e970 :(.

But I never regret when I purchased. If you are curious and want to learn, these devices will provide good experience on it.

So sad. The thief will never sell for its real value...

Re: Buying N900 in 2016?

I just bought another one in reasonable condition for less than 30 Euro. They are becoming increasingly rare for that price though.
Don't really need one but it is nice to have a surplus of N900's :)

All I can say is that I am sorry for your loss.
I'd like to get my hands another n900 to try N900 core duo mod.

Thanks.

I have one or two n900 batteries, i am afraid it could damage because I am not using it, and I don't have an external charger for n900 batteries outside the phone.

N900 I miss the:
-Sound recording (like a professional audio recorder)
-picture/video recording/playback quality
-32gb Space.
-customization possibility

I believe I'll go to get another one again!

Yup go and get another one. Nothing like this has been made yet and even the Neo900 is not worth it since its not really powerful enough compared to current devices. So its better to just find this little fella and make some power use of it.

Good Luck!

Re: Buying N900 in 2016?

Also in regards to neo900 they are modified n900, you could buy the board and put in a n900 you already have. So neo900 either they or you need to buy an n900 first.

Why is everyone talking about the Neo900 as if it existed? Have I been in a coma for 10 years?

Well, it's just like werewolves and tooth fairies; it has to exist because there is so much anecdotal evidence supporting it!

It will be available in about a year or so. At least I am not excited about it since not really as powerful a upgrade as the Nokia N900 itself. As per Moore's law it should be at least 8x faster but its not even near it.
It'll be better to get a Nexus and buy add on accessories as per requirement.

Speed is not everything, you know.
Actually speed is next to nothing really; the interesting features have nothing to do with speed :D

I am willing to sell my N900.
GSM module doesn't work, doesn't detect SIM card
If buyer manages to make it work I might track him and mug my N900 back :D
Rest all is fine, screen, wifi, camera, stylus, keyboard, slider, camera slider anything you can think of but GSM module :(

Will be shipped from Bangalore, INDIA. PM me for more.

Re: Buying N900 in 2016?

Agreed juiceme.
Until it is being shipped ...it is a hoped for device.
I am invested in it ...so I hope...

And to the comments about it not being worth it when it is finally released...

A true "no black box" linux phone that isn't hamstrung by corp. proprietary crud ...
an actual "open" phone...unlike the n900...
I would assume you haven't really noticed all the work trying to pry the os open ..by the "freemantle" project?

Even if the neo is released 10 years later it would still be the best viable and functional alternative to the crap that phones with iphone and android run.

The n900 as a better option than the neo?
No i don't think so....
running linux phone pure...instead of maemo is the best option...since we can feed off of the work done by others more easily compared to the very very very small group of devs we have remaining who are working as fast as they can on maemo...
It is just the simple truth of the matter...
Look around here.....
So many current apps that are expected to run on every other os ....just don't ....for us...
and why?
because of fremantle's closed bits in part...
and in part because we don't have the great numbers of people working on maintaining them.
The neo would eliminate much of those two issues....

And speed is a non issue..
the specs of the neo to be released ...though humble and seemingly negligible in compare to the latest dross from samsung or lg or whoever ...and what android and apple expect to use...
the specs are FAR more ...than adequate... for running a linux phone at a blindingly fast speed...

I'm no fanboy spouting and gushing and defending the neo
I am just looking at the whole of the situation with our current devices...the diminishing numbers of dev's and maintainers...
and looking at the android and apple alternatives ....aren't alternatives at all to a maemo successor...
let alone a proper linux phone...
I would just as easily follow any other viable linux alternative that is to be released...
But there just isn't any other on the horizon...
Them's the brass tacks...

So

Re: Buying N900 in 2016?

I have found some new N900's for sale for reasonable price. My ageing 2010 veteran is showing signs of age. Question I have is it possible to make a perfect clone of my current N900 so I can keep all the years of command line mods and tweeks I have done?

I know Nokia's own backup just covers media files and contacts.
using Gsync/Rsync I can backup most files to external drive.

But what about a real clone? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: Buying N900 in 2016?

I've had mixed results trying to clone an N900. Some members here claim that Backupmenu should do the trick. It did not work for me without issues.

There is NO such thing as "finding new n900's"

What you found are poor chinese copies.

or you found the n900 equivalent of this...

the odds happening being ...highly ...highly....doubtful.

Haahha....

Ah Chen....
It is no disparagement directed at your country.

Here....in Canada....
There are many fake brands...poor copies... of maple syrup....
Thankfully they must be labeled so ...
Since the difference in taste is the difference between ...is akin to fine wine vs motor oil.

My only lament with the Chinese method of copying ...
Is that usually the Chinese make a knock off cheaper and better than the original!
Hell I am usually the first to order ...."...."...whatever ..from China...
Just because of this fact.

Sadly the n900 isn't copied as well...

Hmmm....
Yknow...
I have an incredibly way out there......wacky idea........

I didn't mean that :p I sometimes uses Chinese copy to describe certain things myself as well... :p

The point was we seem to have a taste of motor oil, instead of maple syrup to the majority. No one was even bothered to taste it. :(

Re: Buying N900 in 2016?

They could be genuine new n900's.

Here in the backwaters of the known universe it is possible that some stock still exists, unlike in mainstream markets. If i can fine a way to clone one, i might take the chance, better than 600 eur on ebay or the perpetutual neo900.

The thread that I linked describes exactly what I did. I admit it may be a bit long though. In short, IIRC, I made sure to install the same kernel and BackupMenu on both and then just did a full BackupMenu copy of the old one (i.e. both root and opt) and restored it on the new one.

And that worked for me 3 (three) times already, without any hickups.
But pichlo is right, it is not 100% safe. Nevertheless I would (and surely I have to and will ;)) go that route!

and one (two?) time(s) it was also between different HW revisions!
okay, last time I lost somehow support of 'multiboot' package, which btw was deprecated long time ago ;) but normal boot/work behaviour

Someone once posted a joke "mod" made by glueing two partially functional N900s together. Despite an extensive search I could not find the link.

The search facility on TMO sucks big time. It cannot search for words shorter than 4 characters (so "CPU" or "duo" are out) and limits the results to 12 pages so hoping to find the wanted thread manually in the search results is often doomed to failure too.

I was hoping the original poster of said thread would speak up but he has probably not seen you post.

It is not really a joke, just a lot of work/(not so)fun ;) But there are some Problems

http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...10&postcount=5

Im wondering if a second n900 is really the right expansion module for a first n900 in mobile role after you manage the connection/escape from the firsts n900 closed old hardware and software.
