Cold flash may be an overkill. First it would be nice to know which files have been deleted. Depending on that, there might or might not be a chance of rescuing the OP's data before flashing. If data is not an issue, then I would proceed straight to normal flashing according to this wiki guide.

may be you forgot to press and hold U key on your N900 before connecting to PC? and what are you trying to flash first? vanilla or fiasco?

Try this:
- remove battery from phone
- plug USB cable to computer and then to phone
- start the flasher on PC and start flashing command
- quickly insert battery to phone

Impossible. Bootloader is on a partition that Filebox can't see.

That won't work. You need to insert the USB cable while pressing the U key. Do the above with a slight modification:
- remove battery from phone
- count to 30
- start flasher on PC and start flashing command
- plug USB cable to computer
- insert battery to phone
- press and hold the U key on the phone
- while still holding the U key, insert USB cable to phone

Is your XP 32 or 64 bit? Flasher won't work if 64. Try booting from a live CD with 32 bit Ubuntu. You will need to download the Linux version of flasher.
