Intel Plans to Merge Meego System With Limo, FT Deutschland Says

"Intel Corp. (INTC) plans to merge its Meego operating system with Limo, which is backed by NEC Corp. (6701), Panasonic Corp. (6752) and Samsung Electronics Co., Financial Times Deutschland reported, without citing anyone.

Meego has been unable to keep pace with Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android and Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPhone and may benefit from having partners, the newspaper said in an e-mailed summary of an article to be published tomorrow.

Great? Uh..

Not at all. That is a bad news. Limo is highly closed.

Besides: is it true?

Well, if it is true, it certainly follows suit of the path of all OSS-commercial projects. The OSS community is good for the dirty work and once a half baked product is emerging, the industry slowly and quietly makes it their own.

Maemo seemed like an exception until Nokiosoft dropped it.

There are no free lunches and publicly listed companies usually have a hard time justifying contributing to projects that don't guarantee $$$ in return.

On the other side, publicly listed company has made some money on community project.

In either case developer device programs, is extremely cheap way of getting worked done, without hiring anybody.

Just saw that 'beta news' also picked up on the FT Deutschland story.

If it is true, it is yet another twist in the Meego story.

If it does get merged, I would have thought the major advantage to be preserved would be Qt, for both user experience and as a development platform? Perhaps Qt will also be licensed by Limo or similar?

Thanks
:)

I'm guessing it's fork time, then?

I thought Limo 4 was going to be open, as opposed to earlier Limo efforts. From what I've read Samsung Linux Platform SLP is based on Limo and is meant to be open too, just whether it sees the light of day. So if Meego merges in to Limo, then this is perhaps the best chance for proper Linux handsets again.

Just got this email:
Quote:

Today, the Linux Foundation and LiMo* announced Tizen™, an open-source, standards-based software platform for multiple device categories, including smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, netbooks and in-vehicle infotainment systems.

Tizen builds upon MeeGo* and LiMo and will deliver an application framework built upon HTML5/WAC 2.0 standards to help developers reuse and extend their code across multiple OS's, app stores, and devices.

For members of the Intel AppUpSM developer program, Tizen introduces new opportunities to expand reach into additional markets. The Intel AppUp developer program will support Tizen and provide comprehensive tools and community support to help you create compelling, feature-rich, and differentiated apps. Applications developed on Tizen will be able to be submitted to the Intel AppUp developer program for validation and distribution via Intel AppUpSM center and affiliate app stores.
this link worked, other one didn't

(so, yeah, MeeGo is toast)

It's a phonetic representation of what they're saying it will be.

It's going to be the next big thing in mobile computing from tablets to handsets to in vehicle systems....

Just teasin'
