Open GL 4.1 Released!

And here is the best part:

"New functionality in the core OpenGL 4.1 specification includes:
  • Full compatibility with OpenGL ES 2.0 APIs for easier porting between mobile and desktop platforms;"
I am not a dev but I have to imagine this is good news for anyone working on games/emulators :D

This means that developers who will use the OpenGL 4 engine can code now mobile applications (including N900) without using extra libs for converting the API into a mobile API.

@boxkillor:

Exactly. It's like writting a game for PC and then you have the possibility to export it to Mobile without recoding the entire game.

Re: Open GL 4.1 Released!

Note that OpenGL ES and OpenGL already shared quite a large subset of functionality.

The issue has always been that nobody on the desktop wants to use GL ES (because GL is easier, and people tend to teach GL instead of GL ES, and of course because GL ES has less functionality).

So nobody will want to limit himself to the ES subset, and the situation won't change at all.

A real game changer might be WebGL, though.

Re: Open GL 4.1 Released!

But doesn't this mean that something written in GL can be easily ported to GL ES?

Well it depends on the code. It may be easely or it could be harder...

Anyhow, it's a big difference replacing 40% of the code instead of rewritting all the code.

Keep in mind what javispedro said..
