[Announce] Faster kinetic scrolling in app menu (PR1.2)

Many (including me) were particularly annoyed with the introduction of the PR1.2 menu, which had slower (much slower) kinetic scrolling.

Here's a modified hildon-desktop package which has this reversed, and includes all fixes post PR1.2 (call UI glitching etc...).

Download link: http://mohammadag.xceleo.org/public/...+0m5_armel.deb
It will not install via the application manager

Package should only be installed on PR1.2, it will not conflict with future updates (if any).

To install the package (rootsh and wget have to be installed):
Code:

root
wget http://mohammadag.xceleo.org/public/maemo/debfiles/hildon-desktop_kinetic_2.2.138-1+0m5_armel.deb
dpkg -i hildon-desktop_kinetic_2.2.138-1+0m5_armel.deb
killall hildon-desktop

If you can't/don't want to install wget, download it to your PC, copy it to the "root" directory of your "Nokia N900" device (/home/user/MyDocs) via USB/ssh then
Code:

root
dpkg -i /home/user/MyDocs/hildon-desktop_kinetic_2.2.138-1+0m5_armel.deb
killall hildon-desktop

An apt-get upgrade will reinstall the PR1.2 one (possibly because it prefers versions in the repo), so you may want to pin it.

Code:

echo "Package: hildon-desktop
Pin: release a=unstable
Pin-Priority: 1001" >> /etc/apt/preferences

You should add this to bugzilla, as a solution for the next release of Maemo 5 update!

Hmmm. Is there any detailed list of these fixes?

I dont know why this kind of fixes are hard coded by nokia and not in a configuration file

Thanks MohammadAG

Already started a community SSU for the N900 which includes new updated packages, details about that later. ;)

Re: [Announce] Faster kinetic scrolling in app menu (PR1.2)

Nice, works charmingly after a manual download and installation. For some reason it gives an error using the wget approach.

Code:

Nokia-N900:/home/user/MyDocs# wget http://mohammadag.xceleo.org/public/maemo/debfiles/hildon-desktop_kinetic_2.2.138-1+0m5_armel.deb
--09:53:38--  http://mohammadag.xceleo.org/public/maemo/debfiles/hildon-desktop_kinetic_2.2.138-1+0m5_armel.deb
          => `hildon-desktop_kinetic_2.2.138-1+0m5_armel.deb'
Resolving mohammadag.xceleo.org... failed: Temporary failure in name resolution.

How do you compile Nokia specific apps yourself? I see there are some progress on some default apps what is provided beyond PR 1.2. Is there any tutorial around?

Thanks.

Not sure why wget failed for you, works for me :)
Same way you would compile any other packages, fixes I've found at the moment are for hildon-desktop, hildon-home, hildon-status-menu and hildon-application-manager.
What I'm interested in is the new pulseaudio package, but that hasn't been released yet :(

Anyways, I'll post more about this when I post links to it (SSU)

Re: [Announce] Faster kinetic scrolling in app menu (PR1.2)

Good stuff MohammadAG!

This patch removed the really annoying "jumping" receive call UI issue. I didn't count how many times I've rejected a call when the UI moved while I was hitting "answer" I ended pressing "reject".

Thanks a lot!

Apparently, the issue at hand is deeper than I thought:

Re: [Announce] Faster kinetic scrolling in app menu (PR1.2)

The wget failed also with my N900.
Anyway - I installed it using second method.
Is it possible to make scrolling faster? Every time I play with colleague`s Andriod (Desire) I see much better scrolling than N900 has.... ;-(((

Thanks a lot for your work MohammadAG!

Didn't he just say that application menu scrolls now faster as it used to before PR 1.2. What scrolling you are talking about?

It is faster than before install the script, but in my N900 is not as fast as Desire - froyo 2.2.
I am very grateful to MohammadAG for this script. Just ask - can it be faster?
Regards.

You should try edited transitions.ini file, it makes transitions really smooth.
Backup original transitions.ini in /usr/share/hildon-desktop/ and overwrite it with transitions.ini in attached zip file.

Re: [Announce] Faster kinetic scrolling in app menu (PR1.2)

@jorjino,
Okey.
As a workaround for you install http://maemo.org/packages/view/app-search-widget/ from application manager and vola, you do not have to use cumberstone scrolling. Just type and launch. FCK fast compared to scrolling :P

@noc
I think that he was talking about application scrolling and transition.ini doesn't affect on that.

Instinctiv works for me, reboot your device, sometimes hildon-desktop stops rotating (even the stock one), no way to reproduce this so I can't file a bug against it.

Anyways, to undo, apt-get --reinstall install hildon-desktop

Thanks @slender,

I am talking about scrolling in Contacts menu.
Already found faster scrolling in overall menu.
Well I got use with typing the first letters of the contact I am searching with hardware keyboard, so no problems for me.
Regards.

Re: [Announce] Faster kinetic scrolling in app menu (PR1.2)

isnt the scrolling in the apps like contaxts, photos etc a wontfix, so that wont ever get sorted internally.
thats always been my main beef with the phone, i hope one day someone can patch that :)

Overall scrolling

Marked INVALID because report too vague.

transitions.ini i posted few posts ago makes all maemo menus, scrolling in contacts, photos, and applications menu a lot faster.

Thanks MohammadAG working like a charm. This doesn't appear to conflict with any special menu folder changes as well. Well done.

If i install this, will my edited transition.ini file be affected (removed)?

Ps : Thanks for the constant tweaks maded by the community to improve what should have been done from the start by Nokia...

It replaced my altered transitions file to the original one one, so I had to place it back in again

BTW a few minutes after installing the faster kinetic scrolling a system sound (the sound you get when you click dashboard button) starting stuttering and wouldn't stop till i rebooted, not sure if it's because of this, but it's something to keep in mind just incase more people have this issue

Re: [Announce] Faster kinetic scrolling in app menu (PR1.2)

Ha!

I installed this package. Not for the faster scrolling, but for the post-PR1.2 fixes, and IT WORKS VERY WELL!

The call UI glitch is now over!
Thanks so much for making this release!

The other good news is that Sticky Notes still works with this new desktop. :)

Suggestion:
Add to the installation instructions that a reboot is required after installing it. It never hurts.

No. For me everything went fine after hildon-desktop restarted itself after killing it.

Patience is a virtue :)

I'm doing some checks to see what is affected when the Maemo 5 metapackage is upgraded, apparently the Ovi Store still works :)

Anyways, I'll announce the repo soon.
