It says, it's for docked phones. Even the N900 could boot a PC to Ubuntu when being attached.
So while this is hot new stuff in Android-land (aka mobile phone stone-age), in Maemo-land we just yawn at it. :)

But it also says it uses the power of the phone? When we boot an PC with N900 with ubuntu we only use the N900 as boot device, or do I get you wrong now?

Still, I think it's a bit confusing written there, I hoped for more technical information...

Not sure what you mean by boot a PC to Ubuntu. Like use the N900 like a bootable flash drive?

What Canonical is doing is making it possible to run Ubuntu off an Android phone (at least from the articles I've read) when you use it in some sort of docked configuration (e.g. plug a bluetooth keyboard in, or attach it to a monitor without a desktop attached). Which the N900 could also do before. But with the Ubuntu + Android configuration you have access to a "good" (at least to me) smartphone when you need it and a desktop like experience when you need it. Whileas with the N900 you got both at the same time but not that great at either (IMHO).

I think docked in this sense means plugged into a charger that also provide HDMI and USB out. But yes, this is basically ye old Debian chroot with video out (the old N8x0 wet dream).

The main point is "shared services and applications are delivered using a Convergence API module which ensures the tight integration between desktop and mobile environments". So that the mobile device-hosted ubuntu has access to Android data like contacts, agenda and the so (you get the more or less the same result by accessing to your google account from your ubuntu or whatever desktop).

Ubuntu and Debian have been running for ages on Android devices, in a chroot like Qole's Easy Debian, upon the Android-tweaked Linux kernel. No docking is needed, you get the Ubuntu desktop screen on your mobile device display, and interact with it directly. See this video from my Samsung Galaxy Note:

That's Openoffice.org upon Ubuntu 10.10 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1405447 (Ubuntu 12.04 is almost there). I have been running Debian Squeeze too from a chrooted environment I made according to http://www.mayrhofer.eu.org/debian-on-android but this Ubuntu image is quicker.

Oh, and Android is not mobile phone stone age. It's the species that the rules of evolution are presently favouring... while unfortunately our beloved Maemo, due to climate changes, is getting its place among fossiles :) Both have large chunks of DNA in common, coming from the archetypal Linuxius Torvaldsii archeobacteria ;)

Is this Motorola Atrix-type stuff? Atrix using a docking station which provides Ubuntu ("webtop" mode).

Anyway, Bullsnort if you ask me. Both for Ubuntu and having a separate dock doing all the gruntwork.

Seems that all those chroot systems are using VNC as display. It might look usable on video, but for real use it is too slow. Hopefully Ubuntu on Android will use something else.

"Ubuntu for Android" from Canonical does not use the VNC solution, as far as I know.
