ssh root vs devel-su

something I don't get, what is this devel-su thing, I become root but do not have full permissions...

Code:

mario@rune:~$ ssh root@theresia
root@192.168.43.190's password: [good root password]
Permission denied, please try again.
root@192.168.43.190's password: [^C]

mario@rune:~$ ssh user@theresia
user@theresia:~$ ssh root@0
root@0's password: [good root password]
Permission denied, please try again.
root@0's password: [^C]

user@theresia:~$ devel-su
Password: [good root password]

BusyBox v1.20.0.git (MeeGo 3:1.20-0.2+0m8) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

root@theresia:~$ whoami
root
root@theresia:~$ cd /home/user/gpslogger
root@theresia:/home/user/gpslogger$ chown user.users main.py
chown: main.py: Operation not permitted

Re: ssh root vs devel-su

You are not root as $ hasn't changed to # as here:http://i67.tinypic.com/2doqvp.png

Well you're not running openmode, are you?

Re: ssh root vs devel-su

flash your device in open mode with an open kernel (see ubiboot)
this is the right thing, else you will often run into/against the aegis wall
or try to handle that with aegis-dpkg or other hacks like inception (afaik not working anymore) or other (someone more info?)

on the device $ changes to # when getting root via devel-su but via ssh I do not know

devel-su is like sudo gainroot on N900 and as there is no su (with suid bit) you need devel-su

you cannot ssh as root but need to connect as user or develop(er) and then devel-su

and as long as you do not boot with an open mode kernel you will never have full root rights

oh, I miss my N9! :o

and there are wikis and lot of threads like
how to resurrect my N9

have fun with this gem!

I was getting a feeling my N9 was not behaving as my own phone, thank you for the extra details.

but what is this aegis wall, I've already met it more often than desirable, and it's new to me (used to N900).

anyway, ubiboot .. I'll have a look and add the link here.

is this one the best source to use?

That site was unfortunately closed a long long time ago....
For harmattan flasher you can download for example from here; http://www.swagman.org/juice/flasher_3.12.1_i386.deb

I just added the link you gave in the wiki page I was referring to, or maybe I will remove the broken one and replace it with your link.

first I did dkpg -i with the downloaded file and I got the error:

flasher:i386 depends on libusb-0.1-4 (>= 2:0.1.12).

which I could not ignore.

/tmp/flasher: error while loading shared libraries: libusb-0.1.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I then started aptitude, it proposed a solution for the dependencies and managed to install it properly.

Now I wish to save a couple of things which came on the N9, mostly games, or curious, Chinese stuff. ;)

Re: ssh root vs devel-su

I am reviewing the wiki page http://wiki.maemo.org/Flashing_N9, fixing links, mainly removing old stuff which is only causing noise, I wish to have a guide one can read sequentially, not historically.

for the history, also this wiki engine keeps a history of every page, just use the history view.

please help: I have questions without answers!

I have to say: I don't understand beans of what I am supposed to do to choose a firmware, I read the instructions, compare with what I can find, and do not see the relationship between the two.

also, this NaviFirmPlus, it's become useless since Nokia's gone. so what's the use of still mentioning it?
