Hardware Engineers: Can we replace OMAP 3430 w/ 3630 :)
Assuming we can buy an OMAP 3630 chip, do you think we could solder the faster and less power consuming 3630 in place of the 3430.
I have read they have the same package size. The 3430 is at 65nm and the 3630 is at 45nm. I also read TI pdf that shows a diagram of them sharing the same architecture. The pdf is located here: http://www.ti.com/lit/swpt024 Have Fun :) |

If you can do the solder work, I know there's a job for you in a robotic assembly line somewhere..

Short answer: No.

Please, come back here when you manage to buy a single 3630 chip from TI. :)

But but but but, if enough of us agree on it, we could buy a thousand of them! And then it would even make sense to start our own production line! We could call it the ... OpenPandoraBox, or better! without the Box suffix. :D

Long answer: no.
It will be cheaper to buy 10 of whatever devices seem powerful enough as oposed to the n900. |

However, if you have a reputable email address at a company (I bet you can get access to one), they will send you a free sample, if you tell them the right story. While I don't believe it would work, if it does, let us know. Having said that, I see no real reason why it wouldn't only I would not risk my euro $500 device just to test it. Good luck |
Re: Hardware Engineers: Can we replace OMAP 3430 w/ 3630 :)
TI is not selling OMAP3630 chips in the normal distribution channel. You can come to it only if you are "high-volume wireless OEMs and ODMs"
The best you can get from TI is OMAP3530, in quantities no less than 1000 units. It would roughly cost you around 32-40K USD. How many N900 devices can you get for that bag of money? |

Basically....impossible |

Embedded devices like tablets, mobile phones and games consoles don't have upgradeable parts like you might be used to on a PC. Everything about them is designed around a specific chip running at a certain speed with particular thermal properties.
