Have you seen maeMaps? The latest beta version has GPS and some tests of local search.

It would be better to try to implement these ideas in maemo.org
Google has a different agenda.
He should push to make ovi maps like we want.
Everybody that cares with the future of Maemo should participate in this brainstorm:

Nokia should implement free turn by turn navigation on OVI. Although it’s a difficult decision for Navteq, it’s better to make it now, while in the position of world best map supplier. The model should be; the users add corrections and traffic information to the available maps.

Id much rather see, an off-line one. I mostly use the Sat Nav when im out of the UK, traveling in Europe, and the Data charges are just way to much to use an online version

It shouldn't be THAT difficult a decision. My friend has a 5800 Xpress Music and HE has turn by turn as standard, for a phone which costs about half as much as the N900 if not less.

Of course we should get it too, we are paying a small fortune for this device and if it wasn't Linux/Open Source based I am not sure I would even think twice about it. Software wise we are getting very little for our money, with 80% being open source.

Hey Alex,
I think it isn’t like that. I have a Nokia 5800 and it doesn’t have turn by turn navigation. Only if you pay a subscription (big fee).

Mmmm... Google Maps with Navigation on the new Droid we have is fantastic. I definitely agree that something like this is needed on the N900. I'd like to see a Google software product get created, but if Ovi maps is the one that needs to have this functionality, then I'm cool with it.

Re: Vote for Google Maps on Maemo/N900

If Nokia wants to break through the market with Maemo 5 and 6, they will have to compete with the GPS navigation capabilities of Android. In my opinion any solution much inferior to googles will not cut it, and will drive lots of non maemo fan customers straight into the arms of Android devices

At the very minimum Ovi needs Voice activation, turn by turn, and especially it has to be free/included with the device.

I love maemo and have purchased the N900, but I seriously found myself thinking about the Motorola droid, when I saw the GPS navigation function in action. Tap a button, and tell it where you want to go. I use navigation often, and there is a huge difference between voice activated navigation and something like maemo-mapper.

Maemo-mapper is a great tool, I use it daily, but not very user friendly/intuitive.

It has to be seamless.
OVI needs that!
