Audio player in 2016

I'm in need of a bluetooth-enabled audio player and my old retired N900 would fit the bill just fine. I have SomePlayer installed from the days when I was using it as my phone, but I've always hated its interface. Is there anything else available these days?

My favourite audio player on any device is Rockbox - seems to support bluetooth. http://wiki.maemo.org/Rockbox

i think bluetooth audio (A2DP) is not the job of the player as such ... on the N900 i believe it is taken care of by both bluez and pulseaudio, so any player should 'theoretically' work fine as long as it uses pulseaudio

that said, i still use the stock player & open-media-player ... may want to check out oscp if that fits your fancy

Additionally, the official site which lists all music players it works on, and has endless documentation: http://www.rockbox.org/

I had no idea it existed as player-independent software. I loved it on my Sansa clip and I've installed it on every player I've owned that supported it (mostly old iPods that were given to me by friends who upgraded).

I've been feeling sorry that dedicated players are vanishing from circulation and Rockbox was going with them, but now I see there's a version for Android in development as well. If it turns out to be as good as the dedicated versions and they can get an apk working I'll probably end up uninstalling every other player I have on every mobile device I own :D

And it goes without saying that I'll be giving it a good try on the N900 as well. :)

I think they gave up on the Android version of Rockbox because it wasn't really Rockbox and there are countless good music players for Android. Rockbox is still in active development btw, they just haven't done a major release for whatever reason. See http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/MajorChanges for a list of changes since the last 'major version' years ago. The little Sansa Clip+ is still going strong!

Rockbox has a ton of features. Some of my favourites:

- bookmarking: you can set up bookmarking per directory automatically after you shut it down or stop the audio file (fantastic for multiple podcasts/audiobook listening)
- voice commands: especially useful when you cannot see the display (eg during sports, biking)
- shut off timer (set it before going to bed or take a nap)
- supports lots of soundcodecs
- bunch of soundsettings
- adjustable settings all over the place

One disadvantage - due to the overwhelming amount of features it can be intimidating for new users.

Re: Audio player in 2016

I've just tried downloading the Android version from here and it actually works (no graphics whatsoever, but that isn't an issue as I actually prefer textual interfaces), but on my Zenfone 6's 720x1280 screen the appropriate version has really tiny fonts and the option to enlarge them isn't working, so it's difficult to do much of anything. I'll try other versions, perhaps lower resolutions might work better.

The Maemo version on the other hand works perfectly to the point I'll probably uninstall everything else, thanks a million :)

Rockbox is fukken AWESOME.

Wish they'd hurry up with a new release though.
