Try the following suggested earlier in this thread:

dpkg -x (debfile name) /

It worked for me. It extracts the stuff in the deb package over the old installation.

I was thinking about improving AGTL by adding some kind of caching for the map tiles. Now it loads every tile again and again if you zoom in and out and pan...
