It's easier to setup a WiFi ah-hoc network with a second WiFi USB/PCMCIA card and it' faster also (11Mbps vs. 2.1Mbps).

I couldn't get it to work with my work desktop using an external bluetooth dongle either (set as desktop or laptop) even though it supports PAN. The N800 doesn't recognize my work desktop as a phone...

Mine works fine with the $5.99 T-Zones (TMoWeb) plan and I don't need any extra command. Just remember that the proxy address is: 216.155.165.50 not 216.155.165.050.
