Apologies - it does actually work. I must have rolled back to a previous version of audio.config at some point - anyway, when I checked, I found that the Disable=Sink line wasn't commented out.

I've had a good experience so far with (3) non-standard replacement batteries, too. They don't last quite as long as the original Nokia battery, but they were relatively cheap and I don't mind caning...

What happens if you ping a DNS name, eg ping bbc.co.uk - does it resolve the address? Would be nice if you could isolate the problem to the browser (a proxy setting?)

Personally I like tar though, because I trust it with permissions and it has some useful functions that scp doesn't have - albeit none...

I haven't tried that. It's worth a try I think, but unfortunately I don't have access to a Windows PC here at home. Will give it a shot when I can get my hands on the other half's laptop!

I tried fdisk earlier, yes. Split the card into 3 partitions. Didn't help, I'm afraid.

More on this: the 4G SDHC card is reported as "incorrectly formatted or corrupted" when the N800 is powered up with it present. But if it's inserted while the N800 is running, it makes it available...

Don't think that needs to be done manually, since the N800 has mounted a 1G (non-SDHC) card with an ext2 filesystem without any issues.
