Gizmo relies [mostly] on open-standards (like SIP, Jabber/XMPP), and thus interoperates better than Skype.
But Gizmo also uses proprietary codecs and is as closed-source as Skype is.

A similar situation exists with external hard-disks cases, as most drives require up to 1A.
The solution is to use a Y-cable (with 2 USB plugs), thus drawing 500mA * 2)...

That's true for the SD due to the VFAT (or ext2/3 fs)...
However, internal flash uses jffs2, which, by design, is resilient to ungraceful disconnection (e.g. power-loss).

Alternatively, you can put it in a file (e.g. 11bigcache) under /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/
