Re: [Announce] modRana: a flexible GPS navigation system

Crap, I just have wasted a week of time trying to re-render tiles with the new stylesheet.

Guess what, nowhere in Mapnik docs (nor in __doc__ strings) does it say that Mapnik.Image.view() should...

Re: [Announce] modRana: a flexible GPS navigation system

Some news from competition.

Installed MapDroyd on Android. They render vector data from some unbelievably efficient data files called MicroMap...

Re: [Announce] modRana: a flexible GPS navigation system

So, I managed to get speedup (not giving any numbers, I was too lazy to recheck) for generate_tiles.py which comes with mapnik.
First, I've made it save tiles directly to SQLite database.

Second,...

Re: [Announce] modRana: a flexible GPS navigation system

By some clever use of normalization and a few lines patch for ModRana I have been able to slim dataset for the whole of Poland with zoom level up to 15 and select cities up to 18, from 4792M to...

Re: [Announce] modRana: a flexible GPS navigation system

One reason I'm thinking about is that there are quite complex rules on which details at which sizes are to be rendered, based on a zoom level. Your average SVG files don't provide those rules, and...

Re: [Announce] modRana: a flexible GPS navigation system

The countries are not a problem. But usually you don't want blank data right after the state border, that's the point.

The way it works currently makes me think those people are right. It...

Re: [Announce] modRana: a flexible GPS navigation system

Yep, empty PNGs are just 103 bytes in size. But you can take advantage of preloading one at the very start, and rendering it wherever an empty tile is needed, thus conserving some time (and battery)...

Re: [Announce] modRana: a flexible GPS navigation system

An idea worth considering: an empty tile takes 103 bytes as a file + storage overhead of a row in SQLite. At high zoom levels, OSM has lots of those. Maybe it's worth to have one more column in the...

Re: [Announce] modRana: a flexible GPS navigation system

That's good, I already have gobs of tiles to import. :)

In short: don't muck around with osm2pgsql on a regular machine if aiming at a whole country: it would either be very long, or it will fail...

Re: [Announce] modRana: a flexible GPS navigation system

Yeah, I've seen that. If the blob actually contains tile files verbatim, I think it should be easy to hack together a little Python program from looking at how you store tiles, or even to modify...

Unhappy Re: [Announce] modRana: a flexible GPS navigation system

I think I'm gonna need some help with this one.

I want to have a detailed map of a few cities pre-cached. I go to the city in question, then

1) Download -> around here -> 20 km
2) down max, up...

Re: The in-development Maemo 5 Community SSU

I have found why my phone behaved so weirdly.

The maintainer of libgtk2.0-0 package forgot (or didn't know) that one must do update-gdk-pixbuf-loaders after package installation. What's even more...

Re: The in-development Maemo 5 Community SSU

1.3 + whatever CSSU update was the previous one.

By the way, tried downgrading libgtk2.0-0, no good (in fact, the same). Effectively, gdk-pixbuf cannot load any PNG file.

MohammadAG, can you please also look at the issue with GDK-pixbuf image loading I've described above? It is all screwed up and I frankly haven't the faintest idea where to look. It all started after...

Re: The death of Symbian

Nokia does not matter anymore.
Microsoft is dying too, but its train was speedier and heavier, so it might coast longer, smashing other trains which foolishly happen to be found in its range.

Re: [Announce] Quando Parte, an Italian train station monitor

And then, apart from trains, there are many other different...

Because it's the management style which doesn't care for the company, as long as bonuses can be grabbed by oneself in a very short term.

Public transit offline application, *sigh*

Hello there.

Seems strange that Maemo still hasn't got an application for public transit hints which would work offline, with optionally using your GPS.

Say, just like Metró on S60, or (yuck)...
