Well it seems to be a bug somewhere outside qemu - the same problems i have with qemu running on ubuntu 9.04 on NIT. May be cpu related?

I checked linux image from old qemu, and it also hangs on freeing kernel memory. Win95 stops responding when it's switching into graphics mode.
but it's a nice progress

Well using word "rom" i think about OS image - it is possible to load it eg to ram (but needs editing virtual memory map - for example cmonex from hpcfactor.com done it for nec mp900c). AFAIR WinCE...
