On my 770 the browser does only work with the Opera engine. As soon as I switch to Mozilla or Webkit the browser window closes :-(

There is a port of iodine which does exactly what you want. OpenVPN may work too if you set port to 53, it just does not look like DNS then.
Tunneling through DNS is great for free internet access...

Be sure to use the stock kernel and not the MMC52Mhz ones. I have a 1GB mmc that is incompatible and had the very same problems.
Format the mmc-partition again, as the former crashs will have left...

If you have root access, you can always refresh the catalog manually by issuing
apt-get update
as root in an xterm - I doubt that this will change the "last refreshed" time in app-manager but...

In my experience you have to disconnect the charger _before_ powering off the unit - and you'll have to wait up to half a minute before trying to power it on again

You do not have to flash your device with the actual image. You might as well download the RootFS-Tarball and install it to a partition on your mmc. You'll need the menu enabled bootloader to boot...
