Why not use Midnight Commander's inbuilt FTP client?
I have 4.8.0-pre1 on my N900, works beautifully.
There's 4.7.0.9-2...

It would require quite a code rewrite which I might get to one day but it's not very high on my priority list -- I think there isn't much use in changing most of the settings...
