Re: Poll: Is Google evil? (what do YOU think)

Good quote.

When a company starts dictating to the likes of Europe just how long it will keep data then it has clearly putting it's own objectives over the will of the people. That's "evil"....

Re: Unread posts

My solution to tedious hidden menu options is not to log in :-) Now I mainly use "Todays Posts".

Re: Nokia PUSH N900

Great idea and good luck to anyone going for it. One thing I notice though is the deadline seems tight for individual entrants...

Re: Soundmodem for Ham Packet Radio

> sm[2607]: Unable to set period time 15000 for capture: Invalid argument

I have no idea really but hazard a guess that sampling can only be done at 8KHz.

Re: The N800 has a 3D accelerator, right?

I would just like to restate what speculatrix said above: the amount of goodwill generated would more than offset the cost, particularly when it comes to future purchasing decisions.

Small change request

Could "Control Panel" be swapped for "Mark Forums Read"? I use the latter on every visit and the former never (well, maybe once).

Re: Battery Life Off line and in Stand by mode.

I suspect the reason for such short times is leaving GPS/BT enabled and that the hw remains powered up even when subsequently disabled, in which case one or more reboots are needed to get the hw...

Python is good one to start of with unless you are the sort who likes to jump in with both feet.

Re: Any electronics guru around?

Yes, use a multimeter to check which two terminals on that switch are normally open then connect those across the contact grills. You may even find that one side of each grill is connected to all the...

Re: Any model battery last 10hours wifi on?

Being a cheap git I never give any thought to PSM when I bought my current router for ~£19 :-) Is it safe to assume all new routers support PSM?

BTW: Mine's a PlexusWBR-T2-v0.2 aka TendaTWL548D

Re: Any model battery last 10hours wifi on?

For comparison I have recently left an N810 with wifi switched on and only checked it once a day, no other activity. It took a week to get to one day standby/ one hour in-use.

Re: Alarm on speakers

Just a suggestion, can't check atm, but can the alarm run a program, maybe a script, that could then play an mp3? Might be one way to get around the problem.

Re: N800 - £40 @ pcw

My other half just picked me up an N810 in a London store for £80 :-) Earlier I phoned PC World (0844 561 0000) and they were able to tell me which local branches still had stock. Keep trying!

Re: Announce: Knots - a video streaming app for non-windows users

Hmm, quick search shows vlc cli option for dis/enabling altivec use. General remarks say it makes a big difference but others have experienced problems. So at a guess I would say the G4 mac mini...

Re: Announce: Knots - a video streaming app for non-windows users

Possibly, may bust a gut doing it :-) Seriously, I'm no expert but a 1.42GHz processor should be able to handle it. Does vlc make use of AltiVec? That would help.

Re: Announce: Knots - a video streaming app for non-windows users

Just been on irc (#videolan). It was suggested that the mac devs "were bored of maintaining the build system and GUI with only the old API provided by 10.3" and that a cli version of 0.9.x may work....

Re: Announce: Knots - a video streaming app for non-windows users

Ruby shouldn't be a problem but AFAICT vlc 0.8.6c is the latest working version for 10.3.9. Shame, would be good to put my old mac-mini to some use other than file serving.

Re: Announce: Knots - a video streaming app for non-windows users

Anyone know if OS X 10.3.9 and VLC 0.8.6c will work on the server side?
