Re: Android is not open

Not sure why I'm responding to this flame-bait, but I'm a sucker, always been, sooooo....

Every Android device can be "rooted" in a fairly trivial (and practically manufacturer-sanctioned) way. ...

Re: Sending DTMF while dialing.

Try the comma. That's the typical pause signal.

Re: Getting out of here until I receive shipment notification of my N900

All this anticipation reminds me of a very similar situation back in 2005. Only then, it was the 770. Good times.

Re: N900 vs. Motorola Droid (Verizon Android device)

I guess you're right - that is a connection. :) But Google is a pretty large company, and I have no insight into the Android team's business.

Re: N900 vs. Motorola Droid (Verizon Android device)

Mer has potential, for sure, perhaps more even than it has ambition. Will manufacturers or carriers latch on to that potential? Will end users? I hope so, but until Mer becomes a reality, Maemo...

Re: N900 vs. Motorola Droid (Verizon Android device)

And how many manufacturers are building devices that run on Maemo? Maemo is awesome, but Nokia is the only manufacturer willing to gamble with it (and I respect them a great deal for that), and even...

Re: N900 vs. Motorola Droid (Verizon Android device)

Maemo is mature in that respect, I will grant you that. But even Java went without governance for three years before the Java Community Process was formalized.

In many ways, the close guidance of...

Re: N900 vs. Motorola Droid (Verizon Android device)

Wait - creating a common platform that runs on multiple sets of hardware creates fragmentation? Or are you just refering to its existence as yet another Linux-based mobile platform (like maemo)?

Re: N900 vs. Motorola Droid (Verizon Android device)

It doesn't have to be GTK+ or Qt to be open. (That's especially true of Qt, since it hasn't always been so open as it is now. Then again, I'm obviously biased, as you can tell from my alias!)

Re: N900 vs. Motorola Droid (Verizon Android device)

Speaking as a geek, and as someone that has spent a lot of time developing on Maemo platforms, I don't think many of your points stand as advantages over Android.

The Android has already...

Re: N900 device program / developer, promoter discount?

So if you have a karma of 300+, should you be worried that you haven't been contacted yet? :)

Re: Maemo Mapper for N800

The built-in Maps application uses vector maps that you download en masse before us, typically divided up into regions. Maemo Mapper, on the other hand, is much simpler - it downloads raster maps...

Re: Download maemo-mapper maps on SDK

First, make sure "Auto-download" is enabled in the "Maps" menu.

If maps are attempting to download but failing, then it might be a problem with the /etc/resolv.conf file in your scratchbox shell. ...

Re: Maemo Mapper v2.6 - SQLite and APRS

Well, I might have been unclear. I said that this new version should fix the cross-platform limitations of GDBM that were making it impossible to fix Winmapper. So, theoretically, Winmapper is...

Re: Maemo Mapper v2.6.2 Release

Selecting "Bluetooth GPS" and leaving the field blank is correct behavior. In fact, from the perspective of the backing libgpsmgr API, confusingly, that is exactly what should be done for the N810. ...

Are you seeing the same issue as in that bug? Because the patch mentioned in that bug has been in Maemo Mapper since v2.4.1. Are there any differences between your situation and the situation...

A guess: check the "View | Show" menu and make sure that "Routes" and/or "Track" is checked.

Re: Maemo Mapper Repositories

Not really. Most tile numbers are referenced from 0 degrees latitude, 0 degrees longitude. King County's tile numbers are referenced from some random point near King County. I could technically...

Maemo Mapper v2.6.2 Release

Maemo Mapper v2.6.2 has been released with some fixes to APRS. If you have been having issues with APRS, please update to v2.6.2 and try again.

Re: Maemo Mapper v2.6 - SQLite and APRS

No, the tap-and-hold menu hasn't been removed, and it isn't controlled by a setting. It should always be enabled.

Is anyone else having this issue?

Re: Maemo Mapper Repositories

Google Satellite maps seem to be unavailable, perhaps indefinitely. They don't seem to be very accepting of satellite imagery being pulled off of their servers in an automated fashion, and I'm not...

Re: Maemo Mapper Repositories

Maemo Mapper's estimate can vary widely in accuracy, particularly between repositories. Maemo Mapper doesn't know the average tile size on a per-server basis - I just picked a number. Satellite...

Re: Maemo Mapper Repositories

Unfortunately, it would be impossible for Maemo Mapper to automatically download those maps, without code changes. The tile numbering is too King-County-specific.

Re: Maemo Mapper v2.6 - SQLite and APRS

Satellite maps might be a lost cause from Google. Theyir spyware-detection algorithms are too sensitive to consider Maemo Mapper requests to be legitimate. I can't even test it in my browser...
