Re: Maemo 6 loosing source compatibility with plain Qt, and Symbian^4

Ok, people, do you now understand, after the windows Phone 7 announcements, why I started this thread? And do you see now why it was such a bad idea?

Re: Elop is the 7th biggest Microsoft shareholder!

Nokia's problem is execution in software. Nokia's software skills are rubbish, and MeeGo has become part of the problem, instead of the solution.

Re: Is there anything we can do??

Nokia, or at least a group in Nokia, thought that Open Source was the future. So they invested a bit of money in investigating that possibility.

Whether it is due to the different Nokia factions...

Re: Is there anything we can do??

This isn't going to happen. You're quite right about the heads and the places where the sun doesn't shine, but with Nokia dropping MeeGo as it's next big platform, MeeGo is dead. Nokia is going to...

Re: Is there anything we can do??

Sorry, Sachin, but the only think Nokia believes in is its bottom line. If Open Source is good for Nokia's bottom line, then Nokia believes in Open Source. As soon as Nokia figured out that Open...

Re: Is there anything we can do??

Elop has been hired by the board to do exactly what he is doing right now.

Re: Apple iPad

Symbian^4 and Maemo 6 being source-compatible will be great, but this appears not to be the case. See the thread I started about this problem here: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=34686.

Re: Maemo 6 Vs. Symbian^3 - The Future Contest ..

Well, the good thing about Symbian OS is that there is an enormous amount of functionally complete middleware you can use in your apps. The stuff that is part of apps in other systems, is reusable in...

Re: Maemo 6 Vs. Symbian^3 - The Future Contest ..

That's strange, because I made one on the Dui versus plain Qt thread. Symbian has the mass market, and that is a compliment.

Symbian C++ as a programming language, well, it has some quirks, but...

Re: Maemo 6 loosing source compatibility with plain Qt, and Symbian^4

It won't be that simple.

1) Look and feel. Dui apps will have a different look and feel from Symbian ^4 apps, at least, this is one of the arguments used against my proposal. However, App Stores...

Re: Maemo 6 loosing source compatibility with plain Qt, and Symbian^4

There is a big difference between having to create a couple of widgets and having to rename each and every Qt class in your app.

The Dui proposal requires you to change all the top-level UI code....

Re: Maemo 6 loosing source compatibility with plain Qt, and Symbian^4

Of course, somebody has to do it, but it is an implementation issue. Windows has different requirements from MacOSX, and those differences are hidden inside the multi-platform library. That's the...

Re: Maemo 6 loosing source compatibility with plain Qt, and Symbian^4

You will find that on mobile devices there is not a big need for lots of screen widgets. Symbian never had many, iPhone doesn't have many either, even less than Symbian. Having a few standard...

Re: Maemo 6 loosing source compatibility with plain Qt, and Symbian^4

I am concerned, not panicking ;-) And I certainly would like to hear the Qt specialists on this matter.

Compared to the differences between a desktop PC and a smartphone, the differences...

Re: Maemo 6 loosing source compatibility with plain Qt, and Symbian^4

I am not talking about S60 but about Symbian ^4/Qt. I want source compatibility between Symbian ^4/Qt and Maemo 6/Qt.

Re: Maemo 6 loosing source compatibility with plain Qt, and Symbian^4

Qt for Nokia is an asset as long as code written for Qt can be deployed on lots of platforms. That is after all why Nokia bought it in the first place. So, with Qt in place, Nokia has a very good...

Re: Maemo 6 loosing source compatibility with plain Qt, and Symbian^4

I don't believe it is a good idea to push Direct UI all the way to the application level. The whole point of Qt is it being a library that hides as much as possible of the host platform. So if you...

Re: Maemo 6 loosing source compatibility with plain Qt, and Symbian^4

There is a lot of stuff, but none of it on an official Nokia website, such as Forum Nokia. Blogs have their advantages, but them clearly being an official company policy repository isn't one of them.

Maemo 6 loosing source compatibility with plain Qt, and Symbian^4

[Note: this is a copy of a message I posted at Forum Nokia, about compatibility between the Maemo6 UI and the and Symbian ^4 UI, this being my main concern. But because Maemo 6 is also breaking...
