Re: MeeGo is da Man

*facepalm*

I'm having this major deja vu all over again. Flashbacks to OpenZaurus / OpenEmbedded included.

So much for people learning from history.

Re: Nokia Don't Want My Money: Worst Customer Services in the World?

Uhm, apart from the fact that CE is a joke (the saying goes it stands for 'China Export'), since it is a self-certification the manufacturer does -- the CE conformance declaration is only needed if...

Re: Why does my N900 look for internet connection to use GPS?

Actually you can, sort of, and it is exactly what modern-day dedicated GPS units attempt to do. Using their internal clock, the last received almanac and ephemeris data and operating under the...

Re: DGPS for N900

DGPS-IP (http://www.madbavarian.org/gps/dgps-ip.html) might be the way to go there, possibly?

Chris.

Re: gps lock in 2 seconds !!!!!!!

This is quite normal -- inside a building, you usually only get indirect signals that have been bounced once or several times, which will of course add delays. Since GPS uses signal timing to...

Thumbs up Re: My gmail account has been hacked - I am pretty sure it's related to the N900 somehow

And once again, I curse the fact that there is no Thanks button in Off Topic. Thank you very much for providing us with that insightful write-up.

Chris.

I am sure you have a credible source for this tidbit of scientific brilliance.

Thumbs down Re: How do I get the USSD to work?

Thank you for pointing that one out to us. It is an excellent example of the kind of thinking that seems to dominate Nokia's N900 development:

This kind of statement is, to put it very mildly...

Re: How do I get the USSD to work?

Have you tried using Call forwarding applet to achieve what you are doing?

Re: How do I get the USSD to work?

Uhm, that's what I insinuated, isn't it?

If you intend to implement something that is supposed to provide an existing functionality, you first educate yourself, and preferably learn from people...

Thumbs down Re: How do I get the USSD to work?

What you are using is not a USSD code, but rather a service code (for call diversion, in your case). They may look the same, but they are, in fact, not.

USSD is indeed implemented now in PR1.2....

Re: Format N900 into NTFS

There is no need for (or point in) using JFFS2 on a consumer flash medium (SD/CF/USB-Stick/etc.), since all of these already implement wear levelling internally.

Chris.

Re: [Announce] fMMS - MMS on the N900

Oh, I didn't have any real doubt about that. My sarcastic comment just was a knee-jerk reaction after reading the comments in Bugzilla. It can't be that hard and resource-intensive to make...

Re: [Announce] fMMS - MMS on the N900

Well, Nokia said they would support frals in his project. And thus for a reliable, consistent user experience, they had no other choice than to give him the kind of support they always give....

Re: what was your crapiest phone ever?

Nokia N900, by far.

At least it makes up for it a bit by being a lovely pocketable linux system. :D

Re: Fahrplan app for maemo (Germany)

Hi,

have you considered the problem might be provider related? Some providers are known to operate transparent 'optimizing' proxies that will happily replace e.g. images with lower-quality...

Re: GPS on N900 without connecting to Internet?

I'm not familiar with the Moko's implementation, be it hard or software. Possibly it was using something that most dedicated GPS hardware uses today: offline A-GPS. To this day I wonder why the N900...

Re: GPS on N900 without connecting to Internet?

Make that: GPS is slow. It is, by design, especially if used only occasionally. Modern-day GPS devices use all sorts of tricks to get around that, usually with quite good success.

I already laid...

Re: ANYTHING I can do to preserve battery life please

Probably, yes.

But obviously there is some reason why Nokia's developers think that having swappiness at 100 is a good idea for the device. I've been rather surprised by that fact myself. Does...

Re: MMS - is it true - will not be supported by Nokia.

Oh enough already!

I know for a definite fact that at least the german Nokia website had the line "MMS: In Vorbereitung" in the tech specs for the N900 when they started touting it all over...

Re: N900 meets Vodafone DE

Hmmm, highly theoretical. Not sure if the N900 will handle RTSP streaming, but even if it does, the MobileTV portal is such a krufty mess that you can't seem to even reach it using the browser. Even...

An application messing with user settings that way without appropriate notification and interaction should be an absolute no-no.
