Re: Folks looking for an alternative Linux platform after the WP7 announcement

@eachna,

I'm with you on Samsung, by the way.

I bought a Galaxy S and had to return it after a week because of all the bugs (the GPS issue being one of them). The story at the time was that...

Folks looking for an alternative Linux platform after the WP7 announcement

might find something interesting in this blog post by Rasterman (head developer of the Enlightenment WM, worked for OpenMoko for a little bit, recently went to work for Samsung):

Re: Official: No MeeGo for the N900

Right.... So Meego is putting out a version of their software, and it is up to the "handset manufacturers" (in this case Nokia) to do the work to implement it for their specific device.

The...

Re: Official: No MeeGo for the N900

No worries. ;)

That article references Cyanogen mod (which is one of the more popular homebrew mods floating around).

It isn't an official update; which isn't to say it isn't useful, just that...

Re: Official: No MeeGo for the N900

It's not incredibly difficult, it just involves rooting your phone and reflashing to one of the custom ROMs. Oh, and then reinstalling all your apps that aren't able to be included in the ROM...

Re: Official: No MeeGo for the N900

My point was that there is no official update for my phone past Android 1.6. There are numerous custom ROM images created to port newer releases, but they are homebrew.

I was talking about the...

Re: Official: No MeeGo for the N900

Yeah, speaking as an Android owner whose phone came out about 4 months before the N900, you guys have now officially gotten 1 more software update than I have (and will likely ever get).

So the...

Re: New N8 appears to support USB Host mode

A USB stick is sufficiently low power that it will power through the device (the external power requirement is for USB hard drives).

And yes, the N8 is not an n900 replacement, but as Nokia are...

New N8 appears to support USB Host mode

According to this article:

http://nokiaexperts.com/hurray-threaded-sms-supported-nokia-n8/

One of the features of the N8 is that you can plug a USB hard drive or USB stick into it (provided it...

Re: Videos of EFL Libraries ported to N900

Actually he was working for Openmoko for a while, but he quit after a disagreement over the development plan. I noticed shortly thereafter that he started messing around with the N800.

I agree, I...

Videos of EFL Libraries ported to N900

I can't tell from the video whether this is actually running in Fremantle (but it looks so based on the status bar), but Raster (founder/lead developer of the Enlightenment Window Manager) posted...

Post Re: N900 vs Dell Mini 5 ???

Honestly, while I've been impressed with Android's quick development (going from being pretty consumer unfriendly with 1.5, to being much much better with 2.1) I don't see the appeal in Android as a...

Re: Engadget N900 Review just posted (surprisingly even-handed)

I agree, it's not really an apples-to-apples comparison. The Pre was intially only for sale in the U.S. on Sprint, then in Canada (I think on Rogers), and has since rolled out to a couple European...

Re: Engadget N900 Review just posted (surprisingly even-handed)

I agree a million is totally a doable number worldwide. I don't see a sustaining push though, as we're about six months away from the Maemo 6 device being released (according to Nokia at least).

Re: Engadget N900 Review just posted (surprisingly even-handed)

See, for years I've tried to force myself to use expose on my Mac, but I always give up after a few days. I think the appeal for expose is for people who have lots of windows open and want to find...

Re: Engadget N900 Review just posted (surprisingly even-handed)

While I certainly wouldn't call the Pre a smashing success (being tied to Sprint for the launch pretty much guaranteed that wasn't going to be the case), I don't think for an instant that the N900...

Post Engadget N900 Review just posted (surprisingly even-handed)

I didn't see this posted yet, but thought it was actually a pretty fair and even review (not something frequently associated with Engadget reviews):

Re: I don't need an app for that...

While I'm all for browsers getting better and more "app-like", I think the idea that eventually all applications will be replaced by the browser is naive at best.

There are a great many use cases...

The adp2 was already released a while back, it's the Magic (same as Mytouch 3G).

This might turn out to be the adp3.

Re: N900 WEP cracking / Backtrack 3

Don't know about Backtrack (I don't imagine they're going to want to go through and rebuild everything for ARM sources), but you might want to check out the next version of NeoPwn.

The previous...

Re: The google nexus one

Depending on what you mean by "Android" that's not entirely correct.

Android is a series of things, it's a linux kernel (much like Maemo), it's a virtual machine that runs on top of that kernel...

Re: [POLL] Do you seriously consider something other than the N900?

I'm still on the fence about getting an N900.

I presently have an HTC Magic, and while happy with it, have been looking for a replacement since the day after I got it (I am perpetually looking for...

Smile Re: Will Joe Average understand why the N900 is special?

(I swear some day I'll write a post that isn't novel-length...but today is not that day, alas).

I hate to piss in your cornflakes, but the odds are good that Maemo will never become Nokia's point...
