Solved. Indeed the old configuration was the problem. In the plugin configuration, I had "PatternCommunicationEvent" in the field "MCE LED pattern to use". Changed that to "PatternCommunicationChat"...

Thanks handful for the prompt response. I deinstalled via application manager before, now I did dpkg -P canola2, reboot, apt-get install canola2, reboot. Unfortunately, the problem stays the same.

I got it starting up by creating this link:
# ln -sf /usr/lib/libevas.so.1 /usr/lib/libevas.so.0
