But Qt is C++. If you wish to do Qt apps you'll need C++ (or one of the languages where there exists Qt bindings, but that's even tougher for a newcomer)
Carbide isn't an SDK.

Get a C++ programming book for completely newstarters, one that doesn't require previous knowledge of any other language, including C.

Because it simply never became too popular and because Nokia decided to ditch Maemo. A simple case of business conduct and marketing: not enough demand and thus not enough income to cover the costs.

Damn, if my dear N900 broke and there were no replacements available I don't know what would I do. A symbian phone simply ain't a replacement in any way or form, it simply doesn't come even close in...
