Yes, they still consume power, as they try to update from time to time.
The process of keeping a timeout alive uses battery with or without an internet connection.

I get almost three days of battery.
I removed all my widgets and install kernel power.
These two things alone should save you a lot of battery consumption.

you can check power hungry process with the "top" command.
It will put the highest power hungry process to lowest from top to bottom.
That should give you a hint on what is burning up your battery.

Well, Meego does require more memory than what the N900 has, but it's certainly very usable for the next phone (N0 or N950)
