Re: Who is still interested in Neo900?

Two things make me pessimistic:

1) Microsoft couldn't do it. Microsoft had the advantage of controlling the desktop, and still could not become a third mobile platform despite several attempts. ...

Re: Neo900 - finally a successor of N900

Yes, I understand that in any large organization like neo900.org, there are proper procedures that must be followed before any information can be released to the public. Any such message must be...

Re: Neo900 - finally a successor of N900

This is something I really disagree with. Is it too much to ask for at least a monthly update on the progress? I few paragraphs? Is that unreasonable? I guess I should stop posting messages...

Re: Who is still interested in Neo900?

Well, if it did nothing else, the poll confirmed that Dave999 is still among us, and still a rascal. Somehow, in my old age, I find that comforting.

Re: Neo900 - finally a successor of N900

I think the neo900 project should poll its backers now and ask "How many of the people who have pre-ordered would pay the remaining cost if the device was available to ship tomorrow?". I suspect...

Re: The successor of Nokia N900 - Pyra (Well, sort of)

Nope, it's asymptotically approaching production.

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 2017?

Well, Windoze is moving to ARM on the low/mobile end, and if you exclude Android linux probably runs more on x86 than any other architecture. The days of WinTel being an all-powerful beast are...

Re: Neo900 - finally a successor of N900

There are still Android phones being made with hardware keyboard.

Re: Neo900 - finally a successor of N900

ssh-ing from an Android phone works well. I do it very frequently. Unfortunately Android Oreo broke GNURoot Debian and similar GNURoot options, and nobody seems to be in any hurry to fix that. ...

Re: Neo900 - finally a successor of N900

Does anyone remember how many neo900 preorders there were before the tally page stopped working? I vaguely recall it was about 2000, but I could be way off.

Re: Neo900 - finally a successor of N900

Drastically reduced, i suspect. Since the specs are so poor now compared to modern hardware, and the price is high, only people who value privacy above all else in a phone will be interested. Most...

Re: Neo900 - finally a successor of N900

How does git become broken? I've used it quite a bit, and I've never seen it enter a nonfunctional state. And if it did, isn't it likely that someone in the group would still have a functional...

Re: Neo900 - finally a successor of N900

The Droid 4 may be ancient and obsolete, but it's got a better processor, camera and display(*) than the neo900 will have.

(*) Unless you're really attached to resistive displays

I'll post again if I get it running really well. I doubt that will happen.

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 2017?

I was given a GPD Win for Christmas, and though Ubuntu and Arch Linux do indeed run on it, many, many things such as:

1) WiFi
2) Battery charging
3) Sound
4) Screen brightness
5) Screen...

Re: the Fremantle Porting Task Force, or "how to run maemo on Neo900"

I understand this is busybox's purpose; I just don't think the N900 has such limited resources that stripped-down utilities are a good idea. I run Easy Debian on my N900, with standard gnu...

Re: the Fremantle Porting Task Force, or "how to run maemo on Neo900"

Why use busybox at all? Why not use the regular, full-strength gnu utilities?

Re: Termux and Termux:API apps

espeak won't directly produce audio under termux, for some reason. But you can produce a .wav file, and play it with play-audio:

$ sleep 600; espeak -w temp.wav "hey buddy, 10 minutes of nap...

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 2017?

Sadly, Android version 8 (Oreo) broke gnuroot Debian (see https://github.com/corbinlc/GNURootDebian/issues/206). It looks like the issue may be "seccomp filtering" which was added in Oreo. This...

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 2017?

I disagree. It's running gnu apps on a real Linux kernel. It produces an glibc API for application code. The only unusual thing from a gnu/Linux point of view is the hybris and bionic layers,...

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 2017?

I completely agree about the gui. But maybe folks like us should join the group maintaining Termux, and try to put together a gui for it.

Re: What's the best Handheld gnu/linux machine for 2017?

I realize that "f*ck google" is one of the tags for this thread, but I'm going to risk having my head bitten off, and being drummed out of this community. I am going to claim that the best handheld...
