The same ephemeris and almanac information (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPS_signals) is available (albeit of course slower) on the data stream coming down from the satellites.

And that did it! I have no idea why or how my settings were messed up, but clearing the settings with gconftool-2 was necessary, as uninstall/reinstall hadn't helped before.

In my case, I ran into this when plugging my N900 into my car and starting GPS-based navigation software. I was somewhat surprised when the display would not stay on because the battery was full.
