Re: The maemo Wikipedia Improvement Project
Actually, I specifically said I wasn't reporting you - although I did warn you that persistent wiki vandalism is an offense, which is what I'm supposed to do as a wiki user, if I don't want to get...

Re: Security on Nits?
Assuming you're talking abouut Windows: that assumes that the keylogger could get control of the browser or mail package. This cold happen as the result of a flaw in implementation of the same, but...

Re: Security on Nits?
The typical windows firewall doesn't provide finegrained programmatic access. Otoh, killing the firewall absolutely will rather be a giveaway to most users - eg because it won't be shown in the menu...

Re: Security on Nits?
The first part of this is a much better answer than anything else in the thread, *except* I thought someone who seemed to know what they were talking about had already said that was easily arranged...

Re: On-line image editors for NITs
Go to maemo.org and look at the graphics packages available for download (under "multimedia") especially MyPaint and ImageMagick. This is actually on one of the NITs strongest areas - the pressure...

Re: Security on Nits?
You seem to be under the impression that SE Linux is a Linux distribution. It isn't; ***it's a set of standards for one***. I'm unsure as to how you can state that it is exactly the same thing as SXE...

Re: Security on Nits?
That's a strawman argument. I never claimed that there weren't alternative methods of security. I discussed the Windows approach of firewall and other defensive software, virtual machines, and OS...

Re: I'm off! Have fun with the N8x0!
He did, and in the areas of functionality he named, the Nit does seem to be problematic. e.g. BT keyboard support involves some real annoyances, if people haven't been lying in their posts. It's also...

Oops! I said that Android is likely to replace maemo, when I should have written qtopia - which does have a safe execution environment, and is the reason most analysts believe that Nokia bought...

Re: Could the Web tablet replace the notebook?
I don't what "real computing" is if it isn't writing a novel, a piece of software, or working on a spreadsheet to run a company. People do all these things on laptops. Some people actually like...

Bold added to show where the logic of this argument breaks down. By analogy, one might say "Locks and policeman are worthless in preventing burglary; because an effective burglar will overcome them."...

How about "Only allowing a process to run as root if installed with specific root permission by the user"? It's not rocket science. Very few apps need this.
Sorry: the first clause isn't a...

Based on the posts above, I'm astonished by how potentially ineffective Linux firewalls are, as opposed to Windows ones.
Depends what you mean by "audited". I'm unaware of any process that can...

Re: Security on Nits?
If you can write a game that can generate a million downloads, then you can probably do quite well on adware. 1000-50,000 are more realistic.
Anyway, leaving this aside, you're still wrong: the...

What I find interesting but hard to understand here is your "any platform" comment, combined with the statement about Windows firewalls. It isn't really a Nit question, but why do you feel this way?

Wait - there IS a firewall??? All they had to do was add a GUI???
Anyway, very useful - or at least very interesting, as I don't know if I'll make that much effort. Might be much simpler to carry...

No, that's just wrong. A decent firewall will stop applications sending data (your passwords, credit card numbers, confidential email) outside your machine without your permission.
Wait: TA's...

Another option is always to get a multipen with a stylus tip - it's easyy to find one on ebay.
